The creepiest character that I had to deal with as a boy was my eighth grade social studies teacher. Mr. S was a large mound of a man who enjoyed terrorizing the 13 and 14 year old boys in his classes, particularly, if those boys were athletes and he liked the way they looked.

It was an open secret that Mr. S enjoyed paddling boys and would, from time to time, invent reasons to march certain boys out into the hallway to punish them with his infamous paddle which he had christened “The Butt Burner.”

The lickings he handed out were absolute sizzlers and I can attest personally that when Mr. S took a paddle to your butt, you’d be sore for the next several days. Boys at 13 and 14 are proud creatures and, generally, tried to “man up” and hold their tears, but Mr. S made that very difficult. He had very thick forearms which he showed off by rolling his sleeves up and he would wield the Butt Burner in a circular motion with a lightening fast snap of his wrist. When his paddle hit your extended butt it felt like your whole rump had suddenly burst into flames.

As bad as the lickings that he imposed were, they also came with a rather lengthy paddling routine. Once he had his victim in the hallway, Mr. S would direct the unlucky boy to bend over, feet shoulder width apart, and place his hands on the wall. These fairly standard directions, were often followed by his rough adjustments to the unfortunate boy’s stance and positioning. He would jerk you around physically and, of course, take an unnecessarily long time to do a pat check of your back pockets to make sure they were empty. We all knew he wasn’t just checking our back pockets, but we had little choice but to endure the mauling.

Once he was satisfied with your position, he would deliver the licking, usually three to five swift licks with the Butt Burner that left you with a stinging pair of buttocks and a red face with tears running down your cheeks. It was an intentionally humiliating punishment, often inflicted for trifling violations of class etiquette.

I was athletic in my youth and along with other boys who played sports in junior high school, I was exactly the type of boy he liked to target. I went to the hallway with Mr. S, at least, half a dozen times during my eighth grade year and I was hardly the only one. In fact, there were four or five of us boys that he preferred out of a class of thirty students. Mr. S never paddled girls, even misbehaving girls. He preferred boys. He was about as creepy as anyone that I’ve ever met, certainly the creepiest teacher that I ever had.
