I never sensed that either my father or my mother enjoyed spanking me. Both of my parents were born in 1914 and both lived in rural circumstances. My mother was a farm girl with six siblings and my father’s father was a middle level manager for a railroad line who moved his family to a rural area because he thought it a better environment for his children. Both of my parents were, quite literally, subject to “trips to the woodshed” when their parents disciplined them.

My parents were simply imitating the kind of discipline that they had received. They saw it as the kind of discipline that was necessary to raise a child of good character. I am sure that if either of them had been asked, they would have attested to their mutual belief that they had been raised with spanking and that it had made them good citizens and hard workers. While I do not agree with their assumed cause and effect hypothesis, I think they did what they did in good faith.

On the other hand, I certainly encountered teachers that I am convinced enjoyed paddling children and who did so for reasons that had nothing to do with real disciplinary concerns. It is truly ironic that my parents had such trust in schools and teachers that they never questioned the motives of some of the teachers who were empowered to paddle me and other children. I want to be clear here. Most of the teachers and principals that I encountered who paddled me did so in good faith and for reasons that were generally accepted as appropriate and even necessary. Notwithstanding that, there were at least two teachers that I came into contact with who clearly enjoyed causing children pain for no other purpose than their own personal pleasure.
