It’s nice to hear about a teacher like Mr. Allen. I had many teachers that I remember with love and respect and I remember a few that were bullies and sadists. Interestingly, I had teachers that tanned my behind with a paddle whom I remember fondly because of the manner in which they carried out the punishment.

When I was in elementary school in Illinois, I had a PE teacher who was also the person in the school who handled much of the discipline. He was a beloved figure in the school even though he imposed many of the paddlings that were given to misbehaving students. Mr. M was a man whose fondness for children was obvious. He knew all our names and was unfailingly upbeat and positive. When he paddled you, you thought your bottom had been set on fire, but he always treated you with respect and it was clear that when he spanked you, he did it with the intent of correcting you not shaming you.

I remember him very fondly, though he has been gone many years now.
