I grew up in a Hispanic neighborhood in the 80s, and I'm pretty sure everyone me or my brother knew got spanked at home as the primary form of discipline.

My sister is 10 years younger. Somewhere between my pre-teen years and hers, I think spanking fell out of fashion. She got her fair share of our dad's belt, but corporal punishment was not always my parents' primary way of disciplining her. I remember friends of hers being very curious about spankings in our household because corporal punishment was unknown and exotic to them.

I know part of the shift from me and my brother to our much younger sister was she had nicer things than we ever did because our parents were in a better financial place. I never had any toy I particularly cared if my parents confiscated, and grounding was a no go because I'd have made my mom feel like she was in prison with me. My sister breaking rules might have gotten her backside lit up, but it just as easily could have gotten her stereo or video games taken.
