It probably fell out in the 8Os. People started frowning on it about when people started realizing that those TV evangelists are full of crap.

They were the ones who tricked people in to thinking that spanking could replace parenting, and even tried to twist the Bible in to support that belief. They totally ignored all the verses that talk about how to really be a good parent and focused on spare the rod spoil the child as if that's all the book says on the subject.
