Frankly I think what that assistant principal did was downright criminal, because it's endangerment.
I heard cases of people receiving long-lasting if not permanent damage from school paddling, and hitting someone that hard is simply not safe, especially a teen girl.

I really count myself lucky that schools had banned corporal punishments decades before I went!

My grandma told me a story when she got once punished at school. It was in the early 30s so she just did like elementary school, and then trade school as tailor.

So she was quite poor, so school provided the stationery, like pens and workbooks, and once they had to do dictation, where the teacher read and the students write it down and then check the spelling. So she had finished her previous workbook and she asked for another. The teacher did not hear her and she was too shy to ask again. So when the dictation handed and the teacher discovered she did not write down anything she hit her many times on the top of the hands with a ruler, until they were quite swollen, she said.

Now while her mom sometimes spanked her and her two brothers (albeit rarely I think), her dad really hated the idea of hitting kids (even back then in the 30s!). When he saw what the teacher did, he went to the school and chewed them out, yelling at them, telling them they were being mean just because they were poor, etc... He really let them have it and to my knowledge that's the only time she got punished in school.

To not that where they lived, in Europe, in the 1930s corporal punishment in schools was already illegal, but I guess in some villages they still did it sometimes, especially if you were poor I suppose.
