There were some wooden spoon smacks in my early years but mostly open hand.

Dad changed from hand smacks to using a yardstick on me around time i turned 12. Basically the hand smacks were no longer enough of a deterrent.

My first yardstick spanking yanked me back into line real fast. I cried like i was 5 or 6 again, couldnt believe the pain it left
