I recall my dad first using his paddle when I was about seven. While I was no stranger to bare butt spankings with the hand, for the first couple years when the paddle was used it was often over the seat of my pants. I nevertheless recall that the sting was overwhelming, even over denim jeans/shorts. When I was nine, my mom (who rarely gave spankings) proclaimed that all of my spankings from now on would be on the bare butt. My dad followed that rule from then until my final spanking several years later.

While the paddle on the bare butt was literally unbearable, my dad's spankings were over pretty quickly. There was no way for me to count, but I bet most of the paddlings in my pre-teen years were no more than 15-20 spanks. I had friends and cousins who told stories of getting spanked with a belt which to me always sounded like a scary kid version of a whip. Even now well over 40 years since my final few paddlings, I clearly recall their sting. I hated my paddlings at the time, though they probably provided a perfect sting, and never resulted in anything more than a few hours of a red butt. In retrospect a relatively lightweight, flat "smacking" object was not just preferable to the belt, but now I view such paddles as perfect spanking implements when the child outgrows the flat palm of a hand.
