Like you I remember spanking on the bare being largely confined to kindergarten and elementary schools. I remember in gym class the paddle would typically be applied across the seat of thin and stretched gym shorts the fabric affording very little protection against the searing sting of the wood paddle! From the point of view of just how much those paddlings hurt thay might as well have been on the bare!! My sisters, female cousins and female friends all maintained that the female coach paddled even harder than the male one!

In my kindergarten the two teachers I had both spanked on the bare bottom! These spankings were invariably moderate ones. Usually twenty to twenty five slaps on your bare butt cheeks. They were always done in front of the other children as well. No kid however ever got off either of those ladies laps without moist and puffy eye and tears! You would be sobbing and rubbing your butt and during the actual spanking there would be plenty of ows, ouches and loud crying. You would then be given a hug and have to spend half an hour standing in the corner thinking about your behavior. The two teachers were both middle aged ladies, one being a spinster. They were both very kind but as was the case in those days believed in strict discipline and spanking when necessary! Looking back now it was perfectly natural and normal that they spanked on the bare in a society and time when that was how spankings were typically carried out! They after all had 'loco parentis' and were simply exercising that power and authority.

In elementary school things were more varied. A lot of teachers still spanked on the bare, some others on underpants and panties and a couple on a fully clothed bottom. Also a few would take you out of the classroom to somewhere a little more private for your spanking! One female teacher varied on whether to spank on the bare or on underpants or panties. I think the criteria she used here was the nature of the offence committed and what kind of mood she was in. I think the variation about whether or not to bare the offender's buttocks derived from the fact some teachers had concerns about these slightly older children's modesty! Whilst they might well have not had these concerns with their own kids, with other peoples children they were a bit more squeamish! However, many teachers in elementary school still did give bare bottom spankings!
