My father’s weapon of choice was a leather belt, which hurt like the blazes. I hated the belt with a burning passion, and even the sound of a belt buckle clinking or a belt clearing loops would activate my anxiety well into adulthood.

I was spanked with a switch once, by the mom of one my friends. It had a pretty good sting, but wasn’t as bad as stories I hear about the switch.

I always thought mom and dad’s hands hurt plenty!

When I was growing up moms used wooden spoons and dads used belts for the most part. A few of the more “country” kids, for lack of a better term, got the switch, but even then it was in most cases from a grandparent. I never personally heard of a hairbrush or a paddle being used.

The belt was ubiquitous. Kids used to play a game called “Magic Dad” where the winner was the one who could take his belt off and have it folded over the fastest.
