When I was growing up, my mother was very pro-spanking. I remember her saying things like “somebody needs to get his/her butt beat” and if she heard a story about another kid misbehaving, she would tell me that if I had done the same, it would result in a spanking.

Later in life, I noticed that she would start to downplay the spankings I received, and at times was actually openly critical about parents who spanked. The one that really stuck with me was her criticism of parents who used a belt, which I thought was pretty rich considering I was spanked with one. Her opinions snowballed over time and eventually it got to the point where she seemed to not approve of spanking at all.

Anyone else have a parent/parents that seemed to soften as they got older?
