Well, I don't know if I would actually call the house I grew up in a "mansion". It certainly wasn't as big as where some of those other boys lived. I would stay over weekends with some of them and be amazed buy their homes.

But I guess it's a matter a perspective. Mansion was certainly never a word my family used.

To answer your first question, I think what I was trying to say in the original comment, was that I didn't consider any of the rooms in our house a "living room".

I had a particular picture in my mind whenever I heard the words "living room", And that picture was not our family room, or my parents sitting room, nor even my grandparents sitting room. I always associated the word with the room in Nicole's house first and foremost.

When someone used the term "living room" for the room in their own house, that's where my mind went back to. Mr and Mrs C's house!

For your question about the house... the rooms that you asked about, they were not "bunched up" at the front of the house. The house was simply longer from the East end to the West end. A lot longer actually!

So yeah, If you walked into the main door, you'd be standing in the front room. (we called it the parlor)

The main dining room was off to the left, but to get there you had to go forward to the main hallway around the spiral staircase, and in the second and third doors on the left up the hallway.

If however, you turned to the right instead, (passed the other spiral staircase) you would find the doors to several rooms; including my Grandfather's, Father's, and Uncle's offices. (In that order)

But just straight on, across the hall, that would take you to the family room.

The house had no "South Quarter". I don't really know why everyone always referred to the suites at the North, West, and East ends of the upstairs as "Quarter" when there were only three. But they had been called that for a hundred years before I was even born.

I just never questioned it as a boy.

Finally, I never heard that about mansions having the front door on the north side of the house. I do know that such a design would not have worked with our house. The north side of the house was directly over a deep ravine.

At the time the house was built, it was not too long after the Civil War and there's no way a horse and carriage could have possibly gotten across the ravine in that time period.

With today's technology you could probably build a road through the ravine with a bulldozer. But at the time, the house was just built off the trail from the city, that came around the side of the hill.

That geography dictated that the driveway come in from the south. But the ravine was handy, because it gave the North side of the house an incredible view over the tree-tops towards the lumberyard.

From a window, in the attic, above the North Quarter, you could actually see the lumberyard. Anyways, I hope that answers all your questions.
