I think the transition to DD has been easier for her than for me. She grew up in an atmosphere where female authority figures (not just mothers but also aunts, grandmothers, older sisters acting as caregivers) routinely spanked children of both sexes until they left the house. So it is pretty easy for her to get herself into the mindset of punishing a naughty young man, and separating it from anything erotic.
I grew up in a household that didn't spank but certainly had it as a cultural norm that one doesn't beat women. So the idea of deliberately inflicting physical pain on my wife as a form of discipline is a heavier psychological lift.
But our underlying communication level is very strong, and the review sessions structure that, so the addition of the DD component has definitely improved our overall realationship.
