Chapter 1
Kiyum the squirrel maid had a happy life. She traveled the land with her family, which consisted of her mother, her father, her aunt, and now her baby brother, Mayl. They travaled with a hedgehog family. Her best friend Punner, Punner’s parents, and three little ones. Now everybeast was staying in one place because of the new arrival, Mayl. A large tent was pitched in a hilly, grassy field. Kiyum played with her little brother. They lay in the grass and sun, totally happy and content. None of them knew that it wouldn’t last.
Chapter 2
The beasts were getting ready for bed in a large tent. Kiyum was helping her mother dress Mayl for bed. The squirrel babe wriggled and fussed, but he was finally dressed. Kiyum plunked down on her blanket with a sigh. Punner was already snuggled under her blanket, and now she sat up, grinning at Kiyum with a mischievous look in her eyes. "Come on Kiyum, let's play moles!" The squirrel maid shook her head. "Nah. I don't really feel like playing tonight. It's just this weird feeling I've got. I can't explain it." Punner nodded and lay down again. "I think I know what you mean Kiyum. I sort of have a funny feeling too."
Kiyum had just lain down herself when she heard screams from outside. Her father, who had been dousing the fire, ran in. His face was covered in blood from a gash on his forehead. "The weapons, quick!" He shouted hoarsely. Punner's mother, Raincloud, grabbed a sack and dumped its contents in a pile. The adults grabbed the weapons and ran outside the tent. Kiyum's mother was the last one out. Tossing a dagger to her daughter, she spoke rapidly. "Kiyum, you're the eldest child of all of them. You must protect them if we fail to protect you."
Kiyum just stood there with the dagger in her paw. All she heard was the sounds of battle outside and the whimpering of the little ones huddled in the corner. Punner stood behind her friend, whispering. "Oh Kiyum, I'm so scared. What if they do come in here? Kiyum, if you die, I'll have to fight. I really don't want t'have to do that. Oh Kiyum!" Kiyum pricked up her ears. "Hush!" They listened. All was silent. Then, a weasel poked his head into the tent. Kiyum now took action, running forward and driving the dagger into the vermin's skull.
Things happened so fast afterwards that the squirrel maid hardly remembered any of it. Vermin flooded the tent in a never-ending stream of beasts. Kiyum fought for all she was worth, standing in front of her friends in the corner. But the numbers were too great, and a spear butt knocked Kiyum unconscious.
Kiyum awoke with a pounding headache. She sat up, rubbing her head. She blinked a few times and looked around. She was still in the tent, though it had rips in many places. Kiyum shivered as the wind blew, forcing rain into the rips. She stood up dizzily and made her way to the tent opening. She stumbled and fell on the body of Raincloud. The squirrel maid shuddered violently and screamed. When she was clear of the body, she looked about her in numb shock. All her friends and family lay about the camp, dead. Her mother and father lay trampled into the mud, everyone else looked like they were sleeping, but Kiyum knew they weren't. Punner was draped across some bushes, with her two little brothers beside her.
Kiyum just stood, not knowing what to do. A sound caught the squirrel maid’s attention, and she turned to see what it was. Mayl was slipping in the mud, whimpering and shivering violently. Kiyum ran to him and picked up the soaked babe. Wordlessly, she swept him into the tent.
Anybeast could see at a glance that the squirrel babe was very ill. For the rest of that rain swept day, Kiyum sat in the tent with Mayl, holding him, feeding him, and trying to comfort him. Though he was wrapped in many blankets and the warm embrace of his sister, Mayl still shivered violently, and sneezed often. Night fell and the rain ceased its heavy deluge, turning into a light drizzle. Kiyum wondered if her brother would die, but she shook the thought from her mind. Yet it would not leave her, coming back again and again. She started speaking softly to Mayl. "You won't die Mayl. I won't let you. And you should live, live for me, live for Mum. Who will I talk to if you go? You can't, I won't let you."
Despite the squirrel maid’s fervent pleas, Mayl slipped silently away from her. His sneezing stopped, and his shivering grew weaker and weaker, until it was gone completely. The squirrel babe leaned his head against his sister and closed his eyes for his last and eternal nap. Kiyum sat in the dark tent, holding the dead babe close to her. She leaned her head over him and cried.
