CHAPTER 17
Two arrows flew from the bows of Tarrow and Aubbress. Jet whirled a stone straight and true. They all hit Chrassneyah on her back. Hissing in pain, she reared up, "You will never sssssslay me!! I am Chrasssssneyah. No beassssst hassssss ever dared to come near me. You will die here!!!" Revin shouted to his companions, "Go to the other side of the hill. Hurry, this is my fight alone!" They did as they were bidden. Suddenly a loud warcry pierced the summer air, "Deathwatchers, Deathwatchers, Kill, kill, killlll!!!" Out of nowhere a large band of creatures wearing bark masks painted red, seemed to swarm the hill. Aubbress was the first to act. Knotching an arrow onto her bow, she shot one of the beasts. Automaticaly Jet and Tarrow started firing arrows and slinging stones, yelling at the top of their lungs, "Reeeedwaaaalllll!!!!!"

Friar Derral bustled busily about in the kitchens, muttering to himself as he gave his assistants instructions, "Why did the Abbot choose tommorrow of all days, leaving me with only ONE day to prepare for the feast? Frango, please take those Hunny moles out of the oven before they burn. I bet that this is the shortest notice any Friar of Redwall has ever had to prepare for a nameday feast. Skipper, isn't there enough hotroot in that soup of yours already? Oh and Pikkel, please make sure that you put the cherry for that trifle on straight." The beasts in the kitchen nodded and did took his advice, he wasn't the Friar for nothing. Pikkel yawned, "When 're we gonna go to bed, Friar Derral? It's already after dark, and supper's been finished for a half hour." The dormouse Friar turned to the young hedgehog, "Well you can't blame me for having to stay up so late. The feast is tommorrow!" Skipper smiled over the pot of hotroot and watershrimp soup he was making, "Tommorrow stayin' up'll be worth it, you mark my words."

Revin and the adder wordlessly circled each other, then the serpent struck! Revin blocked her fangs with Martins sword. He swung at her, but she pulled away. She struck again, and again he blocked her. They leapt and parried in the deadly dance of death, moving to the music of fangs against cold metal. Revin swinging Martins sword, and Chrassneyah striking with her poison fangs. Her hipnotic eyes daring the squirrel to look into them.

Jet was discovering his roots as he closed in on the strange 'Deathwatchers'. Kicking out with his powerful backlegs, he shouted in the faces of those unfortunate enough to get in his way, "Euuulaaaliiaaaa!! 'S death on the wind. Euuuulaaaaliiiaaaaaa!!!!" Tarrow had given up fighting with her bow & arrows and had taken to using her otter javilin, yelling loudly at the creatures in her path, "Holt Streamstaaaarrrr!!" Aubbress stood to a distance, shooting arrows at the masked beasts. Every now and then, she would dart into the shrinking crowd and fight paw-to-paw combat with a long dagger she kept hidden away in her quiver. The three friend ears were ringing with the differant warcries, but they fought on grimmly, each fervently hoping that Revin was alright.

Senetta sat up in bed, her frightened cry sounding like a soft whisper beside the fast beating of her heart, "What's that noise?" Suddenly she heard a voice, it was calm and gentle. But there was a warriorlike edge to it,
"Senetta, look to the third day of Autumn,
the moment when the first lark sings.
Four friends will appear through the mist,
my sword one of them brings."
Then the voice was gone, and the squirrelmaid fell into the deepest sleep she'd had for days.

Darkness fully enveloped the hill, but the fighting still continued without end. Revin and Chrassneyah had grown acustomed to the blackness, and so had Aubbress, Tarrow, Jet, and the Deathwatchers. Revin thrust Martins sword at the adder one more time, but in the process he accidentaly looked into her eyes! She swayed back and forth, murmering evily to him, "Come to me, I will show you all eternity. I will take you to placessss you've never been to before. Come to me!!" Revin took a step closer, then he heard a far away voice calling out to him, "Revin, beware the evil ones eyes. Revin, do not repeat what others have done." Suddenly his eyes snapped open and he raised the sword above his head, then he brought it down, all the while shouting, "For Martin. Reeeedwaaaaallll!!!!" Chrassneyah had time for one last cry, just one, "Diiee!!" She struck Revin right before the sword slew her. Revin dropped to the ground beside her. He whispered three words before he lost consciousness, "Thank you Martin."
