Karnis took a couple of minutes to recollect himself, breathing in deeply and closing his eyes before he deemed himself calm enough to ride the shadows. Now that the Stabnars had "taken care" of Grisen, he could get back monitoring Prock. The Radgem were doing their job of crushing resistance through fear, but where there was one rebel there were bound to be more. But this time, he wouldn’t let any one get away with a revolt.
Taking another deep breath, he plunged down into the shadows of the bones, shrinking to fit their size, then growing o leap into the shadow of an abandoned cart. The wind of his speed blew in his face, his eyes watered, his cloak billowed and roared and Karnis smiled weakly. He was untouchable now, a flash of black riding on black. Untouchable, undetectable, safe.
Happiness and satisfaction flooded through him. Confidence returning, Karnis backflipped onto the next shadow, soaring through the air on his back. At the last second, he twisted onto his stomach and sunk his hands into the next shadow, pulling himself onto it with feline ease. He was safe! Free! Alive!
Karnis was about to leap to his next shadow, but suddenly, a shape stepped in front of his way. Karnis whip-lashed to an abrupt halt, stumbling and almost falling. His happiness vanished in another surge of terror, ten times worse than his first, as he found himself staring into the face of Al'Sheen'al'Tamorac.
There could be no mistaking him. The crown on his brow, the log sword sheathed in chased silver, his black hair and even darker eyes that were unusually feverish and tinged with anger… Karnis didn't even need to see the other Stabnars that slowly paced out from behind buildings as a last bit of proof. The Captain of the Stabnars stood right in front of him.
Karnis fell down onto his knees, forehead touching the ground, prostrate and totally defenseless. His eyes had caught sight of an awful scar stretching down one side of the Falcon of the Dark's face down to the jaw line of the other side. A spark of bewilderment ignited inside Karnis' terror. There was only one who could dare hurt Al'Sheen'al'Tamorac: Dama'zark himself. What had the Dark Captain done to displease his Lord? Also, Karnis had never seen a Stabnar's face showing fear, but terror writhed in Al'Sheen'al'Tamorac's eyes. Fear of failure. Fear of his Master's looming wrath.
"Dark Captain," whispered Karnis. "I-I thought that I just spoke w-with one of your Stab-"
Al'Sheen'al'Tamorac's boot ground Karnis' hand into the bones. "Speak when spoken to Tran!" The voice was a harsh pant, a snarl of hate and…franticness? Karnis moaned softly as the cruel spikes on the underside of the Stabnar's boot punctured his flesh.
"Something happened here Tran! A human escaped did he not? Even though he had been stabbed by a Shadowrider?"
"Yes Al'Sheen'al'Tamorac! Yes!" Karnis spoke between wracking sobs. "But I thought that you caught him!"
"You thought that I caught him?" The voice was unbelieving and twisted with danger. "You thought that I caught him!" Karnis nodded wretchedly and suddenly, the boot lifted off of his hand. Al'Sheen'al'Tamorac squatted down and grabbed Karnis' hair, pulling his head up until they were eye to eye. "What gave you that idea?"
Karnis gazed into the desperate, rage filled eyes. "I-I spoke to one of your Stabnars, Captain! She was just here a few minutes ago."
"What did she say?"
"She told me that the Stabnars had caught the human. Then she inquired about Atris and the attack on his Fortress. I told her that it was still postponed…"
"Did you now?" mused Al'Sheen'al'Tamorac. "That's interesting…That's very interesting." He released Karnis suddenly and stood in a rush of black. "Bwir! Grinfak! Come with me! That was Sarvin that Tran was just talking to! She's not going to escape this time!" The Dark Captain paused for a split second, staring down at Karnis. Then, suddenly, his mouth twisted into a hideous smile, one that failed to meet his panicked eyes. "And you my dear Karnis Tran…What am I going to do with you?"
Karnis couldn't speak, he shook all over.
"Larshin!" called Al'Sheen'al'Tamorac. A hooded head swiveled to face the Dark Captain. "Find Radgem and let this idiot Shadowrider find out first-hand what their appetites are really like!" Karnis sobbed with terror, but Al'Sheen'al'Tamorac had already turned away. Beneath her hood, Larshin laughed softly in pleasure. The rest of the Stabnar, however, silently padded away to secure the exits and trap Sarvin within the town's walls.
