Chapter six
Shaun opened his eyes immediately upon waking. He could feel something relatively light and furry, which was breathing loudly, lying on his ankle. He raised himself up on his elbows and saw his godparents fox terrier, Shambles, sleeping with his head rested on his ankle.
Shaun had completely forgotten about the dog upon his arrival, and now he began to wonder why. He had not seen the dog when he first got there. It was usually allowed inside and would run to greet and sniff any newcomers. He decided not to puzzle over this question since it did not matter. Instead, he sat up straight.
He began to scratch Shambles behind the ear at the same time as turning to look at the clock, which read 2:39. He turned his head back around, pulled his foot out from under Shambles’ head and slid off the bed. He then left his room, turned left down the hall and walked straight to the end. Through the window, he could see Johan working at the far end of the backyard, behind the pool.
Shaun turned and began to descend the stairs. As he did so, he could see Shambles leaving his room and begin strolling excitedly down the hall, his tail wagging. Shaun smiled at his amusing walk, then continued down the stairs. By the time he reached the bottom, Shambles was already jumping down behind him, step by step. Shaun walked a short distance down the hall, then turned left into the kitchen, with Shambles sniffing at the back of his leg, having now caught up.
Satol was not there. Shambles had sniffed his way around to Shaun’s knee, so he bent down and picked him up. Then he walked to the fridge on the other side of the room. Holding Shambles over his shoulder with his left hand, he used his right to open the fridge and pick out an apple. Then he closed the fridge, turned part way around and walked through the door to the dining room.
Satol was not here either. Shaun could feel Shambles licking his ear as he took a bit of the apple. He strode around the table, out into the smaller hall and into the loungeroom, where he found Satol sitting on a chair in the far right corner, reading a book.
Shaun walked to the couch that was along the far wall and sat, placing shambles on his lap. He continued to eat the apple while Shambles watched, his eyes begging for a bite. Shaun began to pat Shambles head as well as eating.
After a few minutes, Satol put down her book and sighed, then spoke. ‘Did you have a good sleep?’
Shaun nodded. There was too much apple in his mouth to reply otherwise.
‘Well that’s good. Ezekiel will be home soon, why don’t you go and do something until then?’
Shaun swallowed the last of the apple he was going to eat, then nodded again. ‘Okay.’ he moved Shambles down on to the floor and stood, then he walked out of the loungeroom, through the hall and the dining room and into the kitchen. There he threw the apple core into the bin to his right. Turning left, he saw Shambles sitting on the floor in front of the door. He walked forward and through the door, turned right and walked up the stairs, with Shambles jumping up behind him. Upon reaching the top, he again walked around the barrister and to the end of the hall, where he turned left and into the toilet.
When he came out, he found Shambles down the hall, sitting outside the entertainment room, as if he had known where Shaun intended to go next. Shaun walked to him and rubbed his muzzle, opening the door at the same time. Then he entered the room, turned on the TV, grabbed the remote, walked to the couch and sat down. Shambles jumped up into his lap and made himself comfortable.
Shaun flicked through the channels of regular Television, checking to see what was on. Finding little of value, he reached over to the table next to the couch and grabbed the Austar remote, activating the satellite TV. Again he flicked through the channels. He found a couple of shows that he liked, but they were either almost over or he could not have been bothered to watch the episode again. After again finding little else of value, he moved Shambles onto the couch, went to the movie cupboard which was below the TV and began to look for a good one. After a few moments of searching, he came upon a good one which he hadn’t seen. Either Ezekiel or Johan had gotten the latest James Bond film, Die Another Day, on DVD. Shaun didn’t particularly like the name, but there was, of course, nothing he could do about it. He pulled it out, opened the case, opened the disc drive of the DVD and put in the disc. He then closed it, got the DVD remote and returned to the couch.
He sat down, and Shambles stayed where he was. The disc had started running by itself, so Shaun pressed the skip button to skip all the intro stuff and got to the main menu. He moved the indicator to ‘Play Movie’ and pressed the enter button.
Shaun had barely gotten into the title sequence when he saw Ezekiel carrying his school bag into his room through the glass door on the other side of the room. Obviously, so did Shambles. He jumped off the couch and ran to the door, scratching at it to get through as soon as he arrived. Ezekiel returned out of his room and , upon seeing both Shambles and Shaun, his eyes lit up. He strolled to the door and opened it. Shambles immediately started jumping against his leg, so Ezekiel picked him up, hugged him, and carried him over to the couch, where he joined Shaun. Shambles sat between them, his tail wagging again.
Ezekiel spoke almost immediately. ‘Hey Shaun, how ya doing.?’
Shaun replied, without looking at him. ‘Okay I guess, considering.’
‘Considering what?’
‘Like you don’t know.’
‘Oh, good point. What are you up to?
‘Watching Die Another Day, obviously.’
‘Fair enough. Mind if I watch too?’
‘Doesn’t really worry me. It’s not like I really have a say in the matter, anyway.’
‘True, true.’
Apart from a few remarks about events throughout the movie, that was the extent of the talking. They sat and watched the whole movie, with Shambles talking between them, both of them watching in male admiration of the gun battles, puns, car chases and so forth that Bond went through. When the movie finally ended, Ezekiel again spoke. ‘Hey, you wanna play the PlayStation?’
‘I don’t see why not,’ Shaun replied, with a smile on his face.
‘Cool.’ Ezekiel got up, replaced the movie back in its case and into the cabinet, then pulled out the PS2. ‘What game do you wanna play?’
‘I don’t know.’
‘You haven’t played Budokai, have you?’
‘I don’t believe so.’
‘Well alrighty then.’ Ezekiel put in the Dragon Ball Z: Budokai game disc and then brought both the controllers to the couch.
They played for about half an hour, with Ezekiel winning every game, and Shaun being extremely bad at it. When they got bored, they turned it off, and began to just chat about things that had happened since the last time they had seen each other. Eventually, Satol’s head appeared in the doorway. ‘Dinnertime, boys.’ Then she left.
Shaun looked out the window. The summer sky was beginning to get rather dark. ‘Man, I didn’t realise it was this late. Or do you just have dinner early?’
‘Nah, man, its about 6:30.’
Shaun looked at the clock. ‘So it is. Let’s go down to dinner.’
