Mekerian's rudder swished back and forth nervously as he peered through the dark haze. Hellgates lay in front of him. He whimpered a bit. "Why do I have to risk my life going to Hellgates?" "Because," I told him, "You have to talk to Cluny. You should know that most bad guys end up here sooner or later. Now get moving!" Mekerian shuffled to the gates nervously, more fearful of disobeying the narrator than going to Hellgates. The evilest-looking, most scar-covered wolf you've ever seen stood there, growling and holding a big ax. He leered at the otter. "Where do you think you're going? You don't belong here. I am the great Vulpuz, and here, my word is law!" Mekerian quailed under the wolf's gaze and turned to give a begging look at me. I waved him on, and he got a bit braver. With a gulp, he started talking. "Er, mister Vilpuss sir, I'm here for an interview with a rat called Cluny the Scourge. Do you think he could spare a moment?" Vulpuz swung the ax above his head with a roar. Mekerian took a step back, and the wolf chuckled; not in a friendly way. "Not so brave, are you? Well, this place isn't meant for brave beasts anyway. Cluny can certainly spare a moment; he'd be glad, I think." The gates, wrought of fire, swung open, and Cluny appeared; fur singed, his single eye bloodshot, and the wounds of that long ago battle still upon him. Vulpuz pointed to Mek, then to a spot a distance away. The Scourge nodded gratefully and scuttered to the spot, and Mekerian followed.

Cluny shot a questioning look at Mekerian. "What's this all about, riverdog?" Mekerian whipped out a notebook and a pencil, less nervous now that he was away from Hellgates and the vile wolf. "Merely an interview, sir. Mind if I ask you a few questions?" The rat nodded vigerously. "Mind? Ha, do you think I want to get back there soon? Ask all the questions you want, otter!"

Mekerian:So, where did you first hear of Redwall?
Cluny:My horde had taken in a few more vermin, who had tales of an Abbey in a place called Mossflower. It sounded like a rich place, so I decided to conquer it.
Mekerian:Did you have any idea it would take so long?
Cluny. No, I thought it was full of bungling, peaceful Abbeymice; not ghost warriors with magic swords! I figured it'd only take a day or two to conquer.
Mekerian:What drove you so much to overtake Redwall? You could have just walked away alive.
Cluny:Once I started, I couldn't finish, else I'd have lost face with my horde. I won't even tell you what problems that could've caused.
Mekerian:What side did you get that thick tail from, your mother's or your father's?
Cluny:My mother's, actually. She used to be known as Herion the Whip...But she a fool so I killed her.
Mekerian:So, how many beasts do you think you killed in your life?
Cluny:I couldn't estimate that. Must've lost count around 96...
Mekerian:I see. So, why were you so shaken by a picture on a tapestry?
Cluny:I can't really explain that...That mouse seemed to look right through me. And besides, there were the dreams after that.
Mekerian:How did you obtain your horde in the first place?
Cluny:Well, my father lasted a bit longer than my mother. He was captain of a ship, and made me a crewbeast. I soon showed that idiot, though. Killed him, had myself a crew, and shoved off for land. That was the start of my horde.
Mekerian:How did you think you were going to die?
Cluny:I never thought much on that, except when I was in wars...But I never bargained on death by a rotten bell.
Mekerian:One last question before you go back through those fierey gates, Cluny. Did you realize that young Matthias would be the warrior he turned out to be?
Cluny:Never at first, but later I began to see he was a fighter...Would've been a good addition to my horde had he been a rat...

Mekerian closed his notebook and tucked the pencil behind his ear. "Thank you, that will be all for now." "What??" Cluny grabbed Mek's tunic. "You can't make me go back there! My fur's just started to cool down. Don't make me go back, please!" The otter pulled away nervously. "Er, sorry sir, can't do that. Um, I gotta go...This place is kinda creepy." Mekerian ran to me, and we left together, with Cluny's cries ringing in our ears. "Good job, Mek, seeing as it was your first. Now I think, maybe I should have started you at Dark Forest gates. Less scary there." Mekerian shook his head. "No problem now. I'm prepared for both now, I'm sure."

Second one. (That's it; I started four, but only these two had enough questions to ask the baddies.)Checkery19:48:58 12/14/03 Sun
