's message, "You're kidding!!! This idea just popped into my head! I didn't think it would work, but I gave it a shot...Anyway, I'll post as soon as I'm done writing the next part which should be really soon, like tommarow. Thank you so much Vi, your encouragement is really giving me hope." on 06:55:07 08/09/03 Sat
The Gyrfalcon stole silently down the nearby street with sure, confident steps. His eyes were locked on a house a few feet away as if nothing else mattered. He didn't bother to hide in the deep shadows of the street; he knew from long experiance that no one was awake at such a late hour. All was silent except for the crunch of snow under the Gyrfalcon's boots and the soft, biting wind which moaned lightly through the doorframes and chinks in the boarded up windows.
The Gyrfalcon came to a halt in front of the designated house and glanced at it quickly. If possible, it seemed even more runious than the other houses on either side of it. It's roof dipped so low that it looked like it could come down into the house at any second. The Gyrfalcon stepped up to the solid oak door and pushed lightly with his hand. It didn't budge, but that was to be expected. A door without a lock was an invitation to a whole host of criminals.
The Gyrfalcon placed his fingertips to the keyhole and stood very still, pressing the side of his head to the door as if listening. Then he stepped back, but kept his hand on the door and muttered a few words to the bitter wind. A faint white glow surrounded his fingers where they touched the door. It pulsed once and then faded slowly. The Gyrfalcon shoved lightly with his hand and the door swung open on its hinges. Without any sign of emotion, the Gyrfalcon stepped over the threshold and entered the house.
Once inside, he stood stock still, letting his eyes accustom to the sudden gloom. Slowly, the room appeared before him and he glanced around. It was a small, low ceilinged room, the equivalent of a living room, but entirely bare. Only one solitary rocking chair sat forlornly in a corner, and the smell, the smell was appaling, even for Herigon.
The Gyrfalcon's trained eyes ahd already spotted the door Crinnath had told him to go through. He strode through the house as if it belonged to him, treading so lightly that his boots hardly made a sound. Passing through that had filtered through a chink in the window boards, his cloak whispering lightly behind him, the Gyrfalcon padded softly over to the door.
He reached it and pushed with his hand. It swung open with a little groan, as if it knew there was somebody in the house who didn't belong. The Gyrfalcon had put one foot from the door, when there came a sudden low cry from behind him.
Whirling around, the Gyrfalcon ducked behind the door and stared around him. There came a muffled moan, and a dark shape in the rocking chair stirred restlessly and then cried out. The Gyrfalcon raised an eyebrow. Slowly, the thief padded over to the rocking chair, keeping to the walls and the shadows.
When he got close enough, his eyes could make out the frail and painfully emaciated shape of an elderly woman, slumped as if lifeless in the chair. He stole over to the side and stared down at her, impassive as a statue.
She was sleeping, he could tell that, but her blue-veined hands were cluthching the arms of the rocking chair so tightly that her knuckles were turning white. The Gyrfalcon shook his head almost sadly. Life hadn't been kind to her, you could tell that at a glance. There was hardly anything left of her, and he was here, to take away the one thing that she held dear even beyond her own frail life, the life of her son.
The Gyrfalcon clenched his fists violently. If he started letting his emotions take control of his actions, he would be caught or killed very soon. Turning his back on the old woman, he strode back to the door and slipped through. He had work to do.
