The Court took place in a wide circular room, filled with wooden benches for the courtiers to sit in, and decorated with woven tapestries of heroes out of legends. In the center was a carved dais upon which stood a throne, carved out of a single block of oak and painstakingly detailed. Rainbow hues form the stained glass windows positioned high above the throne filtered down into the room, hilighting the figure in the throne and those behind it.
Sitting on that majestic throne was Herigon's current King, Edward II. He wasn't a young man anymore and even though he sat straight and proud in his throne, it couldn't hide or even compensate for the harsh lines of worry and sadness which had transformed his once healthy face, into an unrecognizable mask of suffering. His hair was turning gray, he had deep purple circles under his eyes and his head was bowed as if the the weight of his gold crown was suddenly too much for him to bear.
Behind him stood his son, Prince Philip and heir to the throne. Philip resembled his father in many ways. He had the same sharp eyes and hawkish face, but there was a certain superiousness to his face as if he was above all the problems and strife, when really his future and the future of his kingdom depended on how these problems were fixed. He leaned casually on his broad sword, surveying the Court with shiny eyes.
To the KIng's left, stood Japal, Captain of the Royal Archers. She stood in such a way that it was evident that she was expecting trouble. She dtood with her hands clasping her bow, her hair tied back in a simple briad, and her chain mail glinting.
As Reggis burst through the doors, everyone swiveled around to face him, and he tensed visibly under the stares of the courtiers. Striding forwards, he dropped onto one knee before the King, feeling Edward's piercing gaze riveted on him in a less than friendly manner. Kepping his eyes respectfully downcast, Reggis bowed his head annd fidgeted a bit under the stares of the Court.
When Edward spoke, his voice was harsh and taut. "You're late High Commander. Again!" Reggis shifted his weight and stared at the floor. "And after I personally requested you to be on time and present! We are here today to discuss a matter which is very important and serious and you don't even have the decency to be on time!"
Japal smirked and glanced quickly acroos to Philip. He was smiling openly, his eyes flashing. Although she didn't care for the Prince at all, they both agreed on one thing. They despised Reggis. The High Commander was abully, intimidating his guardsmen and scorning them at every oppertunity. There were even dark rumors that Reggis had killed a guardsmen for being too careless, but as of yet, they were just rumors without a shred of proof to back them up. Reggis was the type who ruled through fear and relished it.
"Well?" snapped Edward and Reggis knew that he'd have to try to explain himself. Taking a deep breath, Reggis said slowly, "My apologies sire. I had urgent business to attend to."
"More important than your duties to your King?" asked Philip tensly.
"No, of course not!" replied Reggis aggresively. . "You know sire that I've ever benn loyal to you." He raised his eyes slightly to fix Edward with a stare and the King nodded slightly. Satisfied, Reggis lowered his eyes once more.
The Courtiers glanced at each other nervously. Although Edward had nodded, he was still staring at Reggis with a brooding, intent gaze that made everyone uneasy. "What is this buisness you spaek of Reggis?" asked the King finally.
"The Gyrfalcon sire," said Reggis eagerly. There came a general groan from the assembled courtiers, Philip sighed, and Japal rolled her eyes, but the King gave no sign of emotion. Reggis' eyes flicked around him angrily. "I'm so close! He actually left his cloak behind! We can get him!"
"Reggis," said Japal suddenly, stepping forewards. "That's what you've said for the last three months! Give it up! The Gyrfalcon's the least of our problems! And, besides, he's not stupid enough to be caught be someone like you!"
Reggis stood up suddenly, his face contorted with rage. He drew his sword with a hiss of steel on leather. "Care to try me out, Japal?" snarled Reggis. Immediatly, the Coutiers scrambled out of their seats and backed hurridely away in a rustle of silk, leaving a wide semicircle around the two figures. Japal scowled and, keeping one hand on her bow, whipped out a long knife from around her waist. Philip stood up straight and grasped his sword, but Edward made no move whatsoever.
"Enough!" He growled angrily. "I will not have violence in my Court! Sheathe your weapons this instant, or I'll swear that I'll have you both arrested and thrown in the dungeons!" At a gesture from their King, a group of around sixty guards came forward from the shadows behind the throne. They were fully armed but very few could meet Reggis' glare. Japal starred around her angrily, but jammed her long knife back in her belt and let her bow fall to the floor.
Reggis sheathed his sword violently and crossed his arms over his chest. He gave Japal a look that said quite clearly, 'We'll finish this after Court.' Japal raised an eyebrow in agreement.
"That's better," said Edward. "Now prehaps we can get down to buisness?" Reggis nodded and his gaze swept from Japal, to the King, to Prince Philip, and he frowned suddenly. "Where's the Embric?" he asked scowling. "Shouldn't he be back already?"
Edward leaned forward in the throne, his face suddenly very grave. "That is what we're here to discuss."
