It was high noon and the airplanes were high in the clear blue sky. They were returning from a long flight, scheduled to practice flying for extended periods of time.
“I see the airfield!” came the voice of the lead plane’s pilot.
“Finally!” Dakkan exulted over the radio.
The ground was white with snow, but the runway had been partially cleared in order to be visible to the airmen.
One of the wolves who roomed in the same hut as Dakkan, a small brown-tinged fellow, laughed suddenly. “Heh! There’s ol’ woodenleg Dustback, watchin’ us from next to the runway! I’m gonna buzz ‘im an’ see if he jumps clear out of his leg!”
“Wait!” called Lobo, but one plane dropped out of formation and leveled out close to the ground. “He’s going to be in big trouble,” the white wolf sighed.
On the ground, the coyote officer leered up at the plane that had seemingly begun to dive at him. He growled quietly. Blasted show-offs!
The brown wolf laughed giddily as he decreased his altitude to about ten feet. “Look out, sourtail!” he roared, caught up in the moment.
Cursing, Dustback threw himself flat, feeling the wind as the P-40 passed overhead. After it’d roared by, the coyote struggled upright and hobbled as fast as he could after it. “I’ll have your tail out of the army so fast it’ll make you dizzy!” he bellowed.
Dakkan and his comrades landed and climbed out of their aircraft to watch what would happen.
The brown wolf looked behind him. He’d have to circle around again in order to land, but he wasn’t very inclined to hurry. He saw the way Dustback was running and knew he was in deep trouble.
As he was looking back, a hill rose out of the terrain in front of him. He never saw it.
With a great noise of crumpling metal, the plane plowed straight into the rise. A burst of flame soared high into the air. As the wreckage settled, what was left burned merrily.
Sudden concern arose in all the pilots for their fellow airman, despite his reckless stupidity. Flinging aside their parachutes and flak suits, they raced though the snow to the smoldering wreck.
Dakkan arrived first, being the strongest runner in the squadron. He stopped off at a safe distance and scanned the ground and twisted metal for signs of his wolf comrade.
Kit arrived and stood at Dakkan’s side. “D’you see him?”
The otter craned his neck, his gaze fixed on a shapeless lump near what had been the plane’s wing. “I don’t know…wait…” Dakkan glanced at the aircraft’s crumpled frame to see if the fuel tanks had already ignited. Confirming that they had, he approached, for there was no longer any danger of a sudden explosion. The otter knelt by the limp heap he’d noticed earlier.
“It’s him?” queried Kit.
Dakkan brushed ashes off the furry mass and nodded ruefully. “Yeah. I’ll bring ‘im out.” Luckily, nothing was directly on top of the wolf, and the otter was able to drag him into the midst of his fellows.
“Is he dead?” ventured Lobo.
Dakkan checked for a pulse. “Not quite, but his heartbeat is really sluggish…”
Suddenly, the wolf coughed feebly and half-opened his eyes. “What…I…hurts…fire…” he croaked. “I…errrk!” His eyes rolled up into his head and his body went completely flaccid.
Puffing, Commander Dustback hobbled up. “Is the son of a boar alive?” he snapped. Noting the stunned looks of the pilots, he nodded grimly. “Two of you, take him to the hospital. I know they won’t be able to help ‘im, but it’s all we can do.”
The rest of that day, a somber mood prevailed in the camp, and the soldiers all went to bed at 10:00 instead of staying out late. They just didn’t have the desire to have fun in light of the day’s tragedy.
The creatures in Dakkan’s hut were especially quiet, seeing as the dead wolf’s empty bed was a cruel reminder of what had happened to their roommate.
