The gate came down. Water rushed beneath it as an ill woman looked out over the fields ahead. Small fires were burning a different pointsas soldiers tried to extinguish them with dirt and water. The guard who had lowered the gate spoke.
'Take care out there, ma'am. It's dangerous, but it's better than being in here when if the fires or the enemy come. Try to find the lake, or the canyon, you and your baby will be much safer there. Goodbye.'The woman took one last look at her beloved castle town and fled into the darkness, carrying a small bundle in both arms. She stayed in the darkness, trying not to attract attention. She flew past the ranch and saw, by the light of a small, controlled, unguarded fire, a small path of trees leading away from the main field.
'I hope the enemy doesn't attack there. Baby, we're going in.'She ran past the fire, beathing heavily. Turning left, she saw a giant, hollow log and breezed through it. She stmbled over a bridge, through another log and into the forest. She looked around. This place was so peaceful. She saw a sign and read it. 'Kokiri Forest' she spoke aloud. When she looked again, she nearly died of shock. She was surrounded by children in green clothes. Their deep blue eyes looked at her and fairies hovered lazily above their heads. She spoke again.
'Please, help me. I'm trying to sve my baby from the war.' One of the girls walked up and took hold of the baby.
'We shall help you ma'am. I am called Saria. Join us, we must take this young one to see the Great Deku Tree.' Saria lead the other Kokiri's and the woman past log houses, ponda, bridges and fences, then through another log. As they turned right, the woman gasped in surprise. Here, in the middle of another field, was the greatest tree she had ever seen. It reached high into the sky, its brown bark seeming to move, as leaves fell from his top and fairies flew around him everywhere.
Saria spoke again. 'Great Deku Tree! We have brought a child from the castle! His mother wishes that he be able to stay here as there is a terrible war ravaging outside our forest!' She strode forward a few steps and place the baby down.
For a few moments, all was silent. Then, the ground shook as the tree opened its mouth and spoke. 'Hmm...I sense a great power within this...it is as though his futre has already been written among the stars...He must stay here, to be protected from outside influences. Come, miss, does the boy have a name?'
The woman spoke, her voice high pitched from the shock. 'No sir, i have not named him yet.'
The tree spoke again. 'Then we shall name him Link. I sense a great evil rising, and i sense a potential in this boy. Whenver evil has risen in our world of Hyrule, a hero named Link has risen to defeat it. So will shall name him Link and hope he shall have power enough to cast down whatever evil he faces. Saria! Find this boy and his mother an abode, to wait for the time of this boy's challenge to come.
Saria led Link and her mother to an unused tree house, where they both slept through the rest of the night. The woman died a few days later, with the baby Link in her arms.
