Suddenly the squirrelmaid heard voices. There were four, five, maybe even six creatures coming towards her tent. The maid hurriedly shoved herself under a more or less unharmed scrap of canvas and wiaited.
"Cummon, vermin, show us or your dead meat!" shouted one voice.
"But I don't know where it is!" whined another voice, definitly a vermin's.
"Kwento! There it is!" cried a higher voice.
Suddenly the squirrelmaid's canvas scrap was lifted.
"Hul-lo, what have we here?" said the first voice. The maid opened her eyes and saw a hare standing over her.
"Poor thing," murmured the high voice.
"Stuwwuya frumbur!" the squirrelmaid growled through her gag.
"It's okay, young one," whispered a soothing voice. "You're in good paws now.
The squirrelmaid breathed a sigh of relief and fainted dead away.
