Chapter Three
Brogo and Ham were walking slowly along the riverbank towards Fort Tussock. Brogo was deeply engrossed in the thing, while Ham munched on an apple.
Suddenly, a noise came from the a above. Ham looked up to see a figure begin plummeting to the ground. The figure landed on top of him, closely followed by another. Brogo heard this and stopped, slightly further ahead. Turning, he immediately recognised the two figures.
‘Why did you fall out too?’ asked one, rolling off Ham.
‘Well, we almost always do everything together, don’t we?’ replied to other, rolling off as well.
‘Berry and Glippin, what were you doing in that tree?’ asked Brogo.
‘Getting apples’ replied Berry, standing up and pulling Glippin up with him.
‘Careful, those are dangerous weapons’ said Ham, standing up himself. ‘Handilf will tell you that. That makes two injuries in as many days, both with apples and falling out of trees.’
‘Riiiiiigght then’ said Glippin, looking blankly at Ham. He quickly changed the subject. ‘Anyway, what are you to doing so far away from the camp?’
‘We’re going to Fort Tussock. Handilf said to meet him there’ Ham explained.
‘Why isn’t he with you then?’ asked Berry.
‘He said he had to tell some Saruhare beast some stuff’ said Brogo, wishing he and Ham could keep going.
‘Well, can we come? We’ve never been to Fort Tussock’ said Berry and Glippin together, sounding more excited than they usually did.
‘If you must. Just hurry up so we can keep going.’
‘Righto!’ With incredible speed, the diabolical duo seemingly pulled haversacks out of thin air. They quickly pulled them over their backs and ran ahead of Ham and Brogo, yelling behind them ‘Always ready for adventure!’ Behind them, Brogo and Ham began walking.
A short distance later, Ham noticed Brogo’s enthralled staring at the thing. ‘You shouldn’t get to attached to that thing’ he commented. ‘We’ll probably end up losing it at some point.
‘Oh, right, maybe you should take it.’ He pulled his gaze away and shoved it in Ham’s haversack. ‘Just don’t take it out of there unless we need it.’
‘Ok, I won’t. Don’t sneak it out or anything. We’ll ask Handilf about what’s going on when we reach Fort Tussock.’
And so they walked. The small party was mostly silent for the rest of the day, only speaking about which way to go next or to ask a question about something. As the sky began darkening and it became harder to see, they set up camp near a ford in the river. After dinner, Brogo took first watch. He sat staring into the dying embers of the fire, with the woodlands in front and the river to his back, Then he nodded, as if confirming his thoughts.
He looked at Hamflies, making sure he was asleep, then crawled over to Ham’s bag. Silently, he went through the bag and, after a short search, withdrew the thing. He then retuned to his spot near the fire, examining the thing fondly. Then, he place it in the fire and watched it heat up.
Hooking it out before it bacme to hot, he examined the runes, but, no matter how hard he stared, he could not make anything out.
As he stared, he became aware of something moving towards him. Soon, he heard an odd noise in the woodlands in front of him. He tore his gaze away from the thing and looked up, just in time to see a weasel swing a sword at his neck. He quickly lay back to avoid the swipe then kicked out with his legs, knocking the weasel off balance just as the rest of his troupe of weasels and stoats came rushing out from the woodland fringe. Brogo stood up drew his shrew rapier and yelled to wake his friends. ‘Wake up, we’re under attack!’ Brogo backed away from the vermin troupe towards his friends, reaching them just as they were drawing their rapiers, prepared to do battle.
Not wanting to leave the thing in an unsafe place, Brogo slipped the small hole area over one his claws. Then the transformation began.
