Kyre the sea otter lay in the shallows of the ebbing tidewaters, watching the dancing firelight with his emerald eyes.
But the expression on his face was not one of peace or contentment. Rather, his brow was heavily creased as he glared hatefully at the huge bonfire on the beach. For there, less than fifty feet from where he hid, his ship burned.
A tall, sinewy ferret stood in front of the fire, highlighted by the red light. His mouth shifted slightly into a malicious grin, the revealed teeth gleaming brightly. "There. I'd like to see that otter follow us now. Probably roastin' in his quarters right now."
Many of the other vermin, a ragged assortment of foxes and weasels clad in corsair gear, sniggered with their leader. They ran triumphantly about Kyre's glowing vessel, imagining their enemy incinerating inside.
But Kyre shifted backward as the tide slowly flowed back out to sea to remain out of sight. His tears burned trails down his cheek to mingle with the seawater as he watched. The sea otter remembered the day, several seasons ago, when he'd left home. His father Gohrah had made this ship himself for his son to seek his adventures in. And now it smouldered, leaning over and crashing into the surf with a burst of embers.
The lean ferret watched as the last of his foe's ship was reduced to red coals. He made a rude gesture at the ptiful remains and barked, "All right. Back out t'sea, mates. We're goin' maraudin'. An' this time we don't have that goodbeast to stop us! Ale for everybeast on deck!"
The wavebeasts set up a cheer and climbed aboard their vessel.
Kyre heard creaking as the anchor was drawn up. Quickly he rose and darted up onto the beach, barely lit by the scarce moonlight. He adjusted his light scimitar in his waist sash and straightened his kelp-green jerkin as he made his decision. After a quick nod at the glowing embers of the small ship that'd once borne him over tide and tempest, he slipped back into the sea and grasped the anchor of the corsair ship. The long galley oars slid out and dug into the water, and the ship pushed off, with a vengeful Kyre hanging just below deck level.

WoW. That was a great story. How do you come up with things like that? (NT)Tessa Rianstar02:10:33 03/07/03 Fri
