In reply to: Dakkan Strongrudder, otter with a quill! 's message, "*rubs his paws* OK, it's been awhile..." on 01:31:00 03/07/03 Fri

The night was chilly and long, but dawn somehow found the shivering sea otter still clinging to the swaying anchor. Kyre gritted his teeth at the red sun as it rose all too slowly, bathing his body with warm light.
He wasn't sure what he planned to do from his position, nor could he be positive that he wouldn't be discovered as soon as the sun was bright enough. All he knew was he had to show the ferret captain what he did to ship-burners.

Brineclaw, the ferret leader in question, rose from his bunk as the first sunrays permeated his room. He stalked jovially out onto the deck, greeting his steersbeast. "Ahoy, Ringbrush, how's 'er course?"
The fox, his tail pierced with many large brass rings, turned his head slightly. "Still headin' due west, Cap'n! Just like ye ordered."
Brineclaw turned his attention up to the weasel in the crow's nest. "Sing out, Scarrbow, d'ye see anythin'? Are yore eyes tired yet?"
The black weasel roared back, "'Twill be a coupla hours afore my eyes get tired, Cap'n! And nary a bit o'land in sight!"
The ferret nodded, satisfied. Just then an undersized weasel skittered by and Brineclaw stopped him with a rough paw. "'Ey, where you goin'?"
The small brown vermin was a nervous creature, sweating profusely as he replied, "Sir, the cooks ain't up yet, an' the crew'll be mighty upset if'n they don't start cookin'!"
Brineclaw waved him on. "Fine, go and get 'em."
A shout rang out from the crow's nest. "Land ho, Cap'n! On the horizon just ahead, see?"
The ferret's eyes weren't quite as good as Scarrbow's. "Ye sure?" he countered, peering at the thin line where the water and purple sky met.
The black weasel snorted. "'Ow many seasons 'ave I been up 'ere scoutin' fer you, Cap'n? Sure I'm sure!"

Kyre listened to this entire conversation with great interest, a bit of a plan forming in his mind. He wasn't sure of the particulars yet, but at least he'd have a chance to go down and talk to the galley slaves once they'd landed...

Wonderful, so far. You do the accents wonderfully, and I particularly like the descriptions in the first part. The plot seems fairly original, compared to other story factors I've seen. Still, one thing concerning content. I'm not a nautical-expert, or whatever, but, after the ship sets sail, isn't the anchor hoisted up on deck? Great work, anyway. (NT)Retina19:38:45 03/08/03 Sat
