Kyre heard plenty of shouting as the corsairs came back aboard and was puzzled. It sounded like a fight was going on.
"Lemme go, y'great seathingy, wot! Grr, cads, couldn't hold me down alone if your lives depended on it! Takes a whole mob of you rotters, eh? ..Ow!"
"Y'great rabbit, stow th'gab or I'll raise another lump on yore stoopid ears. Shuttup!"
"Rabbit?! Tuh! You, sir, are no more than a furred tub o'lard, but I'm not here to hand out insults. Eeeulaliaaaaaaaaaa!"
Kyre heard scuffling on deck and wondered what was going on. Obviously the vermin had bagged themselves a hare, but what a beast bearing a Salamandastron battlecry was doing this far out to sea was a mystery.
Unexpectedly a weasel flipped over the railing above the sea otter, plunging to the sea half-conscious and cursing about a big rabbit. Kyre didn't see him resurface.
"Hoi! Get your mangy paws off me, vermin! No, stop! I can't swim, wot! Yaaaaarrgh!"
"We ain't got no need for resistors!" roared a tattooed fox as he helped toss the hare overboard.
Kyre felt the hare's wind as he flew over the railing and into the drink.
"Wot, can't you bally blokes take a hint? Glurph! Was only jokin' y'see. Blubblub...help! Can't...swim...!"
As the hare went under, Kyre found himself swimming out to him, knowing even as he did it that he was blowing his cover. "Stand still, mate. I'll have y'out!" The sea otter held the hare in strong limbs as he tread water powerfully. "Hey, matey. Name's Kyre Kelpblade."
The hare spat out saltwater wryly. "Blegh. Nasty stuff. Howdy then, young otter. I'm Ferkah Boltscut. Nice t'meet ye, eh?"
An arrow whistled from the deck, splashing into the ocean inches from Kyre's shoulder. "Too open here," grunted the sea otter as he set his mighty legs and rudder into motion. "We'll have to make the shore an' hide."
"But they'll capture us," Ferkah said, concerned.
Kyre grunted again. He knew the chances were good that his hare companion would be right. But he also knew that getting shot in the water like a sitting duck wasn't any good either. Checking to see that his scimitar was still in place, he felt, his paws scrape the sandy shore.
Vermin had disembarked and were waiting in rows for the two fugitives. Kyre whipped out his blade as the hare produced a long dagger and a throwing knife. Seconds dragged by before the first wavebeast lunged forward into a full sprint at Ferkah.
