Chapter two
Chapter 2
Two springs had passed since the babe in woods had set off with a weapon of great destruction: the strength of vengeance against the fox lord, Ringut.
Relvpaw had heard the fox’s name, he’d even heard the description, but he only wanted to see the fox. The young squirrel knew he was to young to fight a fox, but he’d taken care of some evil wanderers in the last two seasons-mostly alone or in twos or threes.
Once he even came across Ringut’s own camp, but the fox himself was surrounded by millions of tents, at least Relvpaw knew what he was up against.
The little squirrel stumbled into a glade in the woods and sitting there was a sandy-furred hare!
He looked at her and she turned around. In her paw was a crossbow and shoved into her belt was a dirk. Suddenly a hedgehog babe jumped from behind the hare and started to dance, pointing at Relvpaw.
‘’Look Cor‘fawl! ‘S a little squirrelly widda ‘atchet!’’ He chanted.
The hare, Cornfall, whirled upon the babe and tickled him to the ground. After doing so, she tuned to face the brown squirrel, asking ’’To join or pass us ye mus’ state ya name h’and business, h’or we’ll h’eat ya’ll oop!’’
‘’Cermon’, yee wouldnay eat up an ’onest traveller loik me?’’ Answered Relvpaw ’’M’name’s Relvpaw the warrior an me business, well, not very interesting.’’
The hare got up and sized up the squirrel ‘’Hmmm, warrior type eh? D’ya want ter join up wid me an’ little spikeychops ’ere? H’I’m Cornfall an’ this blither’s named Nilade.’’
’’ ’D be glad ter. Err, d’you ’ave h’and extra, err, tuck likes o’ the food?’’ Asked Relvpaw.
Cornfall tossed him a bit of bread stuffed with berries and nut cheese ’’S’all we really got, plenty more but not much…’’ trailed the hare.
Nilade hopped to a bag and took out another of the petit sandwiches ’’Deese is vewy tassie, ’ogbabe me likes dem!’’ he squealed.
Runethain watched as Rebusco and a recruited stoat to her band named Doratsu slid over to her. She looked at the delighted pair "Well, Vat is it?" she asked in her strange accent.
Doratsu nudged the ferret Rebusco and whispered ‘’Tell ’er, mate.’’. Rebusco looked at the band leader and answered ‘’We saw some creatures back there. A long eared rabbit, a spiky mouselet an’ a broombottom!’’
Runethain nodded at the two, dismissing them. It’d one season since she’d made her own little army. The fifty or so odd rodents Had been unsuccessfully ruled by Denlar before Rebusco, always on Runethain’s side, had slit the black ferret’s throat. She dismissed Doratsu and motioned for Rebusco to come closer "Rouse der band, get dem retty, now!" Runethain went over to her personal weapon rack and grabbed a rapier and a bow’n’arrow, which she slung over her back.
Dressed in her battle armour, Rebusco quickly led her hoard to a deeply wooded hill were they would not be seen. She grinned, on the path, headed on front of the hill, were Relvpaw, Cornfall and Nilade! One rat started to inch forward, she twirled around and kicked it heavily. The effect was not the desired one, the rat toppled downhill with a deep screech.
Relvpaw grabbed Nilade and hid him in the bushes, unseen. Drawing their weapons quickly, Relvpaw and Cornfall formed a back to back killing machine as the vermin charged down the hill.
The battle was overwhelming for the two warriors, that was until Relvpaw tripped and knocked Cornfall’s crossbow to the side. The bolt was knocked awkward and descended a twisting flight, straight into Runethain’s head. The vermin quickly retreated, taking their unconscious leader with them.
"Hahaha, we showed ‘em!" Said Cornfall, sweeping aside the bushes that they had hidden Nilade in. Both turned shocked to hear the missing babe’s voice come from the retreating vermin.
"Helppp meeeee!"
