Chapter Nine
When she reached the vermin camp, Yetaria groaned and sat down, dropping the rope she had been dragging Rufe along with. A skinny, frightened-looking rat scuttled up. His throat bobbed nervously. “Err, err, do you n-n-need anything L-L-Lady Y-Yetaria?”
The wildcat glared at him. “Go get somebeast – a captain – who can take this squirrel to my mother!”
“Y-yes, M-Milady!” the rat promptly scurried away.
Memo to self: threaten weedy rats, thought Yetaria. While she was mulling over what she would say to her mother, a captain arrived. It was a tall male wildcat that grinned down at Yetaria.
“Up you get, Milady!”
Yetaria actually grinned back, something quite rare. “OK, I’m coming!”
Rufe wasn’t so happy.

Martina wasn’t either.
She’d been searching the Abbey, thinking he’d wandered off somewhere. But he hadn’t. Rufe wasn’t anywhere in Redwall.
Now Martina was sitting cross-legged on her bed, Deodar sitting on the spare bed next to her. It was the only spare bed anywhere. As she sat there, Martina felt a strange feeling welling up in her chest. She didn’t know what it was – at least, she didn’t think she knew.
Deodar knew. The one-eared hare could see it in Martina’s eyes. I may be hyper, thought Deodar, but I know when somebeast loves another.
Martina stared at the floor, fiddling with the hem of her skirt. “Deodar,” she began.
“Call me Deo.”
“Deo, what do you think’s happened to Rufe?” Martina’s voice was even, but there was sorrow beneath her pretty tones.
Deo looked at her. Martina’s eyes seemed rather shinier than normal. “You seen those vermin in the woods? Yes? Well, there’s no guaranteeing they haven’t captured him, I’m afraid.”
Martina stood up and went over to the window. She sighed. “There’s a wildcat.” She said at length. “She tried to capture us once before and I’ve no doubt she’s come back and captured Rufe.” Then the squirrelmaid fell silent.
Deo went over to her, and put a paw on the young squirrels shoulder. There were dark streaks in Martina’s fur where tears had run down her face. The haremaid spoke. “You love him, don’t you?”
Martina gazed out over the trees for a long while, confused by what she was feeling. Finally she whispered, barely audible, “Yes.”
