Chapter Ten

Rufe glared at the wildcat in front of him. It was all he could do; his mouth was gagged with a piece of rope. He had what was possibly the world’s most painful headache, and his body was covered in scratches after being dragged through Mossflower. (I’m not going to write what he was thinking; it would have to be censored anyway.)
The wildcat leaned down to look at him. She was tall, with ginger fur, her long blonde hair was tied back and several earrings dangled from her ears. When she spoke, every time she said the letter s, she hissed. “Ssso, what’sss your name, little sssquirrel?” Then she remembered he was still gagged. She snorted and slashed the rope, scratching Rufe’s face carelessly.
Rufe’s first instinct was to hit her – which he obviously couldn’t (duh). So he just glared at her. She glared back. Yetaria completely ignored everyone.
Then Katanga leaned down again, her nose almost touching Rufe’s. “What’sss your name, sssquirrel?” she hissed.
“Rufe Swiftflight. Though I don’t know why you care, kitty.”
Katanga growled warningly. “I am Queen Katanga, warlord of this horde!”
Rufe snorted. “Like anyone cares.”
Katanga straightened up. She snapped to a nearby captain, “Put him in a cage. Do not feed him.” The wildcat stalked away.
The wildcat captain Yetaria had been so interested in grabbed Rufe’s tail and dragged him towards a sturdy-looking wooden cage. Rufe was getting a bit fed up of this. He was sulking as the wildcat threw him in the cage and slammed the door.

Martina was absent-mindedly staring out over Mossflower, sitting cross-legged on a battlement. Deodar stuck her head up on Martina’s left. “D’you want some brekkers?”
Martina shook her head. Deo frowned. “C’mon, you’ve gotta eat something.”
“Not hungry.” replied the squirrelmaid.
Deo shook her head and climbed up beside Martina. “Hey, move over a bit. Don’t worry bout Rufe. He can look after himself.”
Martina grinned. “He’ll be okay – as long as he doesn’t walk into a tree or something.”
“Does he do that?”
“Yup, never looks where he’s going.”
That’s when an arrow flew over Deo’s head. Luckily it was the side with the missing ear.
Deodar had enough experience to realise that it might be a good idea to get out of plain view. She jumped behind the battlement and dragged Martina down by her tail.
“Ouch.” Martina rubbed her tail ruefully, and then picked up the arrow. “Hey, there’s something tied round this!”
“Huh? Read it.”
Martina tugged the piece of parchment off the arrow and chucked the arrow over the wall. She unrolled it, blinked, then turned it round – “Oops, upside down” – and began to read out loud.
“Err…here we go. We’ve got the squirrelgirls little boyfriend. If you ever want to see him alive again, send out your leaders unarmed at nightfall.”
“Um, are you okay?” Deo frowned quizzically at Martina, who had crumpled the parchment in her clenched fist and was staring into space. There was a steely glint in her soft lilac eyes that had never been there before.
She didn’t look like she was in a good mood.
