Dear Oscar - yes, I think both you and Sir Burton repented at the last minute. Of course, you are both hedonists after my own heart, and I'm sorry they couldn't get rid of that tacky wallpaper for you. Bad Parisian wallpaper and Greek quacks...the deaths of great literary giants. But I'm waxing poetic....

Now, to the issue at hand.....

While it would be easiest to lay down an opinion on your religious simplifications in above post, I feel I must cloud the issue some. Wouldn't resolving the issue of whether or not reincarnation is chance or fate depend upon the exsistence of some god or universal being? Otherwise, who is the judge of good and bad, what deserves reward or demerit? And what about the issue of what is the nature of the soul? Pre-existing or not?

Personally, I feel it's a pickle of a situation. I would feel that for #1 to work the soul would have to be pre-existing, like an entity all on its own. But then wouldn't that make it some kind of parasite, to need an inhabitable host? #2 would I believe only work with the existence of some kind of universal figure/god.

Personally, I find the whole thing can only be justified if it has some purpose, so #2.
