THE FINAL 8
By VERDEL BISHOP Tuesday, May 3 2011
Eight delegates have been selected for the local leg of Miss Universe. The delegates were selected out of a slate of 17 hopefuls at O2 Park, Chaguaramas, Sunday. Ian Lee, National Pageant Director and Franchise Holder noted that the best of the best were selected after a national search, including screenings in San Fernando, Port-of-Spain and Tobago. Lee said: “The task of selecting 17 was difficult enough, selecting eight for the final was even more so from this list of beautiful and talented women.”
In preparation for the finals, the girls will participate in rigorous training and rehearsals, which will include psychological training with psychologists Frank and Jenny Dolly. Lee said psychological training is an important facet of the pageant.
“We are recognised as one of the beauty capitals in the world; the international press looks at us so we are looking at holistic training. Everything can’t be rehearsed; the girls have to learn to value themselves and to keep their emotions in tact,” Lee said.
Lee said on the night of the finals the panel of adjudicators will be looking for an allrounder, a woman with a combination of brains and beauty.
Gabrielle Walcott, who won Miss TT World 2008 and was selected as the second runner-up in Miss World 2008, is also among the final eight selected for Miss TT Universe. Eighteen-year-old Shinequa Francis from Roxborough, Tobago, is the youngest delegate to be selected this year. Francis, a form five student at Speyside High School said she is juggling her studies and her responsibilities as a delegate. She said it’s a daily struggle, but one she is going to endure to the end.
“I always wanted to give the competition a try. I’m really fighting hard at putting everything in place because right now I have exams plus I have to train for the pageant. I’ve learned from the psychology training how to cope with everything that is going on around me. It’s great to be selected in the final eight; and I’m confident that on the final night I have what it takes to be selected as Miss Universe TT,” Francis said. Greer Iton, who was also selected in the final eight said she is very energised about being in the finals. She said making it to the finals is what gives her more fuel to win the pageant. Iton, 25, a medical doctor said a lot of careful thought and planning went into entering the competition.
“I am more determined than ever. I’m very excited and energised and comfortable within myself so I am very focused on what I have to do,” Iton said.
The finalists include Miss Arima, Jessica Didier; Miss Carnbee, La Tisha Hospedales; Miss Diego Martin, Kristy St Rose; Miss Petit Valley, Gabrielle Walcott; Miss Pleasantville, Cherrese K Abreau; Miss Roxborough, Shinequa M Francis; Miss Siparia, Renee Bhagwandeen; The judging panel included Sharon Imbert, Former Permanent Secretary, Office of the Prime Minister; Jacqui Koon How, Artistic Director, House of Jacqui; Heather Jones, Designer, Heather Jones Designs; Gerard Alfonso, Owner of Long Circular Health and Fitness; Collin Abraham, President, Pollen Nation Events Ltd; Dominic Kalipersad, Group Head of News, CCN TV6; Kees Dieffenthaller, Entertainer and lead singer, Kes the Band and Nicole Dyer, Former Miss TT 1999.
The final show for Miss Trinidad and Tobago Universe takes place on May 14, 2011 at the O2 Park, Chaguaramas venue (formerly known as MOBS2).

O.K. So it's official, Shinequa, Gabby and Iton are the front runners. I was wondering why Iton did not enter when she was younger -now I know why-she was in Medical School- I guess we should say Dr. Iton.
