Q. What's the connection between internal parasites and colic?


A. A high percentage of colic cases are the direct result of parasite damage. For example:


Ascarids can physically block the foal's small intestine and stop the movement of digested feed.

Large strongyles like Strongylus vulgaris migrate in the walls of intestinal arteries, triggering a chain reaction that starts with inflammation and ends with blocked blood flow to a section of the horse's intestinal tract.

Small strongyles, when they burst out of a horse's gut lining in large numbers, leave irritating fluid and small ulcers in the intestinal tract wall that cause soreness and pain.

Tapeworms cluster at the opening of the colon into the caecum, causing irritation and partially blocking the movement of digested feed in the large intestine.
While these different parasites inflict varied types of damage, the potential end result is the same: colic.

OKAY Daniel, let's go." I extended my arm, and my little brother reached out and took my hand. I looked both ways down the street and waited for a clearing. As we crossed the street, I told Daniel not to cross any street without first taking my hand so that I could watch over him. He smiled and looked at me with one of those six-year-old "I wonder why" looks.

Regardless of where we were going -- shopping, crossing the street, or just walking around -- Daniel always reached out for my hand. Usually he would reach out first, and out of habit I would extend my arm and find him latching on to my hand. Holding my hand was something that seemed to make Daniel feel secure and special. He knew that my hand would always be there for him to hold, no matter where we were.

When we need reassurance, we want someone to extend a hand for us to latch on to, whether it is a family member or a close friend. There is another hand we can reach for in hard times -- God's hand. God guides us in the bad times and in the good times. All we have to do is reach out.


Prayer: Faithful God, thank you for your love and reassurance as we
place our lives into your hands. Amen.
