LOOK FOR THE BEAUTIFUL

_________________________

1 Corinthians 12:4-11 (NRSV)

There are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses.

WHEN we bought our home, an unsightly extension was attached to the back of the house. I decided to tear it down. As I was getting ready to do so, my sister, Carol, had an idea. I took her suggestion, adding French doors opening into that area and installing a backyard deck.

This morning, as I bask in the morning sun that streams onto my new deck, I feel as if God has shared a bit of heaven on earth. The birds are singing. The wind is gently whispering through the trees. All of this became reality because Carol had a vision of what could be.

What a lesson this has been to me! If we look for the possibilities in all of life, in others, and in ourselves, we discover that God's beauty is among us and within us. If we look with spiritual eyes at people around us and dream of who we can become, we realize that God is tremendously good! Equally exciting, we discover the good in ourselves.

Prayer: O gentle Spirit, give us a glimpse of the vision you have for
us. Help us see in ourselves and in others your beauty and power. Amen.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
To see with God's eyes is to see life and possibility.

Frequently Asked Questions About Equine Parasitism And Their Answers..

Part 2..

Q. When are horses most likely to pick up parasites?

A. Parasite larvae are most active when temperatures are moderate and conditions are moist. Depending on geography, a horse may be at greater risk during a particular season. In the northern United States, for instance, peak parasite infection from grazing occurs in the spring, summer and fall. In the South and Southwest, horses are at greater risk during late fall and early winter.

Horses may be vulnerable year-round to ascarids (whose eggs are extremely resistant to temperature extremes) and pinworms, which never leave the horse host.

Tomorrows question..Q. Why should horseowners be worried about internal parasites if their horses look healthy?

FROM THE HEART

_________________________

Romans 5:1-5 (NRSV)

Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.

_________________________

Pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.

-- Psalm 62:8 (NRSV)

_________________________

AS I drove many miles to be with my dying mother, I thought about how King David had poured out his heart to God. No matter what difficulties he faced, David trusted God. Like David, we can come before God in prayer, open our hearts, and trust God to answer.

I face trials and troubles, but I know God uses them to build me into the person I am meant to be and to lead me toward the goal God has for my life. As I place my trust in God, I experience freedom, peace, and contentment. When I pour out my heart, God hears me, heals me, and helps me. I could not prevent my mother from dying, but I could share my most difficult trials with the Friend who will never fail. My grief diminished as I allowed God to share my pain.

As each chapter of our lives comes to a close, God turns the page to reveal the beginning of the next chapter. When the last chapter of our physical life ends, we will meet God, the author of our lives.

Prayer: Dear God, let us open our hearts to you in prayer. Help us
to trust you and to do your will. Amen.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
In everything God works for good.

Frequently Asked Questions About Equine Parasitism And
Their Answers..

Part 3 ..

Q. Why should horseowners be worried about internal parasites if their horses look healthy?

A. Most horse owners can identify a horse that is "wormy": it looks potbellied, has a poor haircoat and is low on energy. While this level of clinical parasitism is something horse owners know to avoid, 90 percent of the damage done by parasites is unseen and present even in horses that look healthy.

Traditional purge dewormers like pastes and drenches do a good job of removing worms—at the time of treatment. However, a horse can quickly become reinfected with eggs and larvae picked up in pastures, paddocks and stalls, resulting in subclinical parasitism. Even if a horse is carrying low numbers of internal parasites, parasite migration through a horse's tissues can damage the circulatory system, intestines, stomach, liver and lungs. So a horse may look good, but still be harboring internal parasites.

Tomorrows question..Q. How does subclinical parasitism affect the horse?

Prayer

You are so worthy Lord! We praise You for all the many things You have done, and are doing in our lives. Renew our spirits and refresh us with Your power. As we look into Your face, we see love that gives us life. We will shout Your praises! Our hearts will sing of Your goodness. You are our God. It is only Your glory that makes our lives worth living. It is You who can do in our lives what we could never have imagined. You know our weakness and You make us strong. You are our source of strength and hope. Thank You Lord! Amen.

Frequently Asked Questions bout Equine Parasitism and Their Answers..

part 4 ..

Q. How does subclinical parasitism affect the horse?

A. Subclinical, or hidden, parasitism has a depressing affect on a horse's total well-being and performance.
That's because migrating parasites cause damage to the lungs, liver, circulatory system, intestines and stomach before returning to the intestines to lay eggs—all factors that affect how a horse feels and performs. While difficult to prove, most horse owners and veterinarians agree that a subclinically infected horse won't reach its peak growth or performance potential.

Tomorrows question..Q. What's the connection between internal parasites and colic?

LIFE AGAIN

_________________________

Isaiah 35:1-4 (NRSV)

The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad,
the desert shall rejoice and blossom;
like the crocus it shall blossom abundantly,
and rejoice with joy and singing.
The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it,
the majesty of Carmel and Sharon.
They shall see the glory of the LORD,
the majesty of our God.
Strengthen the weak hands,
and make firm the feeble knees.
Say to those who are of a fearful heart,
"Be strong, do not fear!
Here is your God.
He will come with vengeance, with terrible recompense. He will come and save you."

DRIVING wearily for hours along parched roads in South Africa, we crossed miles and miles of barren, desolate land. A few tufts of dry, brown grass struggled for existence. Dry thorn trees scattered here and there offered little shade. Heat shimmered over the vastness in a haze. "How could there ever be life here again?" I wondered.

Yet I know this land. I knew that soon the spring rains would come. This part of the desert receives only a few inches of rain each year, but that will be enough. A mass of beautiful, exotic wildflowers will spring up overnight. This desolate area will become the sea of
color for which it is famous. Indeed, the desert will "burst into bloom."

How often do we go through deserts in our lives with little hope, wondering if there will be life again? The droughts of family problems, times of spiritual dryness, long periods of ill health -- all can cause us to feel hopeless. Even so, our loving Creator is watching over us and will send the rains. There will be life again. Our desert will bloom once more.

Prayer: Loving God, thank you for the promise of new life and of joy
up ahead. Amen.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
No matter how parched we feel, God can renew us.

Frequently asked Questions About Equine Parasitism And Their Answers...

Part 5 ..

Q. What's the connection between internal parasites and colic?

A. A high percentage of colic cases are the direct result of parasite damage. For example:

Ascarids can physically block the foal's small intestine and stop the movement of digested feed.

Large strongyles like Strongylus vulgaris migrate in the walls of intestinal arteries, triggering a chain reaction that starts with inflammation and ends with blocked blood flow to a section of the horse's intestinal tract.

Small strongyles, when they burst out of a horse's gut lining in large numbers, leave irritating fluid and small ulcers in the intestinal tract wall that cause soreness and pain.

Tapeworms cluster at the opening of the colon into the caecum, causing irritation and partially blocking the movement of digested feed in the large intestine.
While these different parasites inflict varied types of damage, the potential end result is the same: colic.

Tomorrow's question..Q. What can horse owners do to find out if their horse has parasites?

REACH OUT

_________________________

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (NRSV)

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up the other; but woe to one who is alone and falls and does not have another to help. Again, if two lie together, they keep warm; but how can one keep warm alone? And though one might prevail against another, two will withstand one. A threefold cord is not quickly broken.

The psalmist wrote, "My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me."

-- Psalm 63:8 (NRSV)

_________________________

OKAY Daniel, let's go." I extended my arm, and my little brother reached out and took my hand. I looked both ways down the street and waited for a clearing. As we crossed the street, I told Daniel not to cross any street without first taking my hand so that I could watch over him. He smiled and looked at me with one of those six-year-old "I wonder why" looks.

Regardless of where we were going -- shopping, crossing the street, or just walking around -- Daniel always reached out for my hand. Usually he would reach out first, and out of habit I would extend my arm and find him latching on to my hand. Holding my hand was something that seemed to make Daniel feel secure and special. He knew that my hand would always be there for him to hold, no matter where we were.

When we need reassurance, we want someone to extend a hand for us to latch on to, whether it is a family member or a close friend. There is another hand we can reach for in hard times -- God's hand. God guides us in the bad times and in the good times. All we have to do is reach out.

Prayer: Faithful God, thank you for your love and reassurance as we
place our lives into your hands. Amen.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Sometimes we are God's hand.

Frequently Asked Questions About Equine Parasitism And Their Answers..

Part 6..

Q. What can horse owners do to find out if their horse has parasites?

A. Some horse owners and their veterinarians rely on fecal egg count tests to determine if horses are infected with internal parasites. A widely used but inconclusive technique, the fecal test includes counting the number of parasite eggs present in a small sample of horse manure. While fecal examination can help identify the types of parasites, it doesn't detect all types of worms. In addition, this test only tells you if egg-laying parasites are present in the intestinal tract at the time of the test. It gives no indication about migrating parasites, immature parasites or encysted parasites. A negative, or zero, fecal egg count doesn't rule out the presence of parasites—it only indicates there are no adult worms laying eggs in the horse's intestines.

Frequently Asked Questions About Equine Parasitism And Their Answers..

Part 7 ..

Q. What can horse owners do to reduce the harmful effects of parasites?

A. A sound, well-designed parasite control program that prevents larval migration can rein in the daily threat of internal parasites. But because there are so many differences among horse farms, management styles, geographic locations and weather patterns, no one parasite control program is right for every horse.
Horse owners should work closely with their veterinarians to develop a parasite prevention program that's tailored to their specific situations. A veterinarian can help identify which parasites are a problem, provide advice on the most appropriate treatment, and make sure the program is effective.

Tomorrows question..Q. Why should horse owners consider feeding a daily preventative, especially if they're giving horses a paste dewormer every two month
