  • The Bible Foundation( The world needs Bibles) -- Ryan, 06:08:40 01/02/03 Thu
    The need for English Bibles around the world is vast. Many countries have
    English as the primary language and most countries have been teaching
    English in the schools for many years. There is a growing network of master
    collection centers in North America (see www.bf.org/bibledrive/cc.htm) that
    accept Bibles for redistribution. Christians overseas can even find ways to
    use damaged and pieces of old Bibles (an important resource). The network of
    collection centers needs to expand. This makes it possible for people to do
    Bible drives and have a way to get the surplus Bibles moving to hungry
    hearts around the world. Can you help find ministries that might be willing
    to accept used Bibles, even damaged and pieces of old Bibles for
    redistribution? If so, please email information to biblecc@bf.org.

    Collection centers need to:
    Be able to accept quantities of surplus Bibles, including damaged & pieces
    Be able to accept US mail, UPS, FedEx, trucking, and drop off shipments
    Accept all the main versions of Bibles and Bible portions
    Take responsibility for the materials
    Issue tax deductible receipts if necessary
    Be able to store the materials
    Be able to find a way to transport the materials to where needed
    Be willing to be listed on the Bible Foundation web site www.bf.org

    Accepting other Christian literature is optional.
    Or if you or someone you know has used bibles or bible portions tehy can mail them to

    Matthew 1:23

    And they shall call His name Emmanuel,
    which being interpreted is,
    God with us.

    O Holy Night

    O holy night! The stars are brightly shining
    It is the night of the dear Savior's birth!
    Long lay the world in sin and error pining
    Till he appear'd and the soul felt its worth.
    A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices
    For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn!

    Chorus:

    Fall on your knees
    Oh hear the angel voices
    Oh night divine
    Oh night when Christ was born
    Oh night divine
    Oh night divine

    Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming
    With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand
    So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming
    Here come the wise men from Orient land
    The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger
    In all our trials born to be our friend

    Repeat Chorus.

    Truly He taught us to love one another
    His law is love and His gospel is peace
    Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother
    And in His name all oppression shall cease
    Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
    Let all within us praise His Holy name!

    Repeat Chorus.

    I am glad to find this website and to be able to post this message. My husband and I ranch here in N.D.. My husband is also in law enforcement. God has placed it on our hearts to do something for his children and to let them also hear the word and feel His love. We provied a 2 hour trail ride on our ranch for kids at risk, abused, victims of domestic violence. We are seeking prayer support and donations of used tack. We have 12 day camps already scheduled for the spring of 2003. Kids 9 years to 18 come and enjoy the horses, and time in a healthy loving enviroment. Most kids have never been on or around a horse. We as horselovers know what it's like to yearn to be on them, around or near them. The horses help us minister to the kids. My husband and I need to outfit 10 more horses as there is 20 kids for each trail ride. If you would have some good used tack in your barn and feel it could be of service to these kids please email us at eternaltrails2002@yahoo.com Or if you would like more information on our ministry please feel free to contact us. Thank you and God bless!

    DURING the Sunday evening service at my church in Louisville, the interim pastor read from Matthew 2:1-12 and talked about the magi coming to worship the newborn King of the Jews. He wanted us to think about what Christmas is really all about - giving. The magi gave from their hearts and from their treasures to the Christ child.

    In Jesus Christ, God gave us a gift that cannot be measured. What can we give to our Lord in return? The gifts of worship, devotion, and service. But we can also remind ourselves and others of the reason for Christmas by sharing the wonderful story of how God became a human in Jesus Christ. By sharing this story, we can offer comfort and hope to others.

    Instead of being caught up in the rush of buying things, we can stop to remind ourselves and others that Christmas is when God gave us the greatest gift: Jesus. In return, devoting ourselves to serving God is the best way we can give thanks for God's great gift of love.

    Prayer: Lord, help us to remember that you gave the whole world the
    greatest gift anyone could ever give. Help us to serve you in ways that honor your gift. In Jesus' name. Amen.

    THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
    Sharing the love of Christ is the greatest gift we can give.

  • True Christians do not celebrate a pagan holiday!! -- Nathaniel P. Robbins, 03:23:05 12/05/02 Thu
    Did Santa die for your sins? Of course not!
    Has paganism corrupted many aspects of the way Christmas is celebrated today? Absolutely!
    Do we know when Jesus was born? Certainly not!

    This much we know: Before there was December 25, there was January 6. As early as the second century, Christians celebrated Jesus' appearance at the Jordan and his baptism by John on January 6. Some time later they expanded this festival to include Christ's appearance at birth. Christians called it Epiphany, or manifestation. So the meaning of the first Christmas was not pagan; it was a celebration of the Word manifest in flesh! Amen!

    It is important to note that the link between Christ and Constantine's sun god was light. For generations, Christians had been singing about Christ's appearance as the true Light, as the light of Creation and redemption. Christians in these early centuries were fascinated by the image of light breaking into our darkness. "We have seen a sign from heaven, the shining star," the choir sings in one early liturgy. Another hymn announces:

    The whole creation proclaims,
    The Magi proclaim,
    The star proclaims:
    Behold! the king's son is here!

    This impulse to sing the praises of Christ's birth did not come from paganism. It was a result of Christians reflecting on the fact that God became man in Jesus Christ and condescended to our lowly estate.

    Many in the fourth-century church viewed Constantine's conversion as the fulfillment of Malachi's prophecy: In the day of the Lord, the "Sun of Righteousness will arise with healing in his wings" for those who fear the Lord's name (4:2).

    Thus it is not important which day we celebrate the birthday of the Little Baby Jesus, only that we celebrate it... and December 25th is as good a day as any for me!

    Though I certainly outlaw any such "christmas" trees, caroling, presents or other such evil pagan customs in all of my congregations, subject to hefty fines if we catch them.

    Glory to the Lord!

    ON Christmas morning I watched some of my children and grandchildren opening their gifts. My heart was heavy as I thought of their broken marriages, non-traditional relationships, and financial problems brought about by unwise decisions.

    I'd traveled through Advent with my church family. Each week, we had progressively lighted the candles of hope, peace, joy, and love in our Advent wreath. We had sung songs of praise to God for coming to us in Jesus. We had acknowledged that Christmas is all about relationships. But this beloved family of mine seemed far removed from this truth of Christmas.

    That evening I read a meditation in The Upper Room magazine about a woman whose parents were alcoholic. She wrote of her pain and how God had come to comfort her one Christmas day. I felt that God was saying to me, "You are my beloved child. You are precious to me and so are your loved ones. I have promised never to leave you or forsake you, and I never will." Hope, peace, and joy returned and my heart overflowed with love for my God and for my family.

    Prayer: Gracious Father, we thank you for our families and friends.
    Bind us together in love for one another through Jesus Christ. Amen.

    Because of God's perfect love, we can love and accept our imperfect families.

  • Preaching in the Ghetto -- Nathaniel P. Robbins, 04:48:55 11/22/02 Fri
    Preaching in the Ghetto:

    This was a tough neighborhood back in the late 70's... plenty of riots and those folk did not trust the white man too much, I tell you! Needless to say, after being out all night booga-loogaing, very few of them were up in the morning for church and rarely did they tithe more than a few copper pieces in the collection basket.

    So in order to draw their interest towards the church, I called my good buddy in Christ, George "Houston" Barnes and got him to bring around his old Chevy pickup. We called this ministry "Operation: Fishers of Man" and I'd get myself set up in the bed of his truck with my fishin' gear while George would drive through the inner city. I used a good 120 pd. line and would attach a nice, ripe watermellon to the end of that line and we'd "reel 'em in"! Amen!

    And let me tell you how successful we were! Often times, we'd have entire mobs of them chasing after us, excited to a fever! Well, we'd lead them to the church, slam shut the doors and spring some good 'ol Southern Baptist Gospel on them before they knew what hit them! We saved a lot of malnourished souls those days... though regrettably, I've lost some spring to my step and probabaly wouldn't be able to dodge all those broken bottles anymore!

    White Line Disease..

    Part 7, and end of series..

    Prognosis and Prevention..

    In most cases, prognosis for recovery to full soundness is excellent, although it may take up to 10 months for the undermined area to grow out, depending on the amount of hoof wall removed. The only reason that a horse might have a poor prognosis is if rotation is involved. Also, O'Grady notes that white line disease can return in some horses, even those with strong hoof walls and no signs of separation. Therefore, horses which have had white line disease need careful monitoring for future episodes.

    Try to minimize risks by avoiding large moisture changes to the feet and turn-out in wet pastures. Keep the toe short to avoid stressing the hoof wall-sole junction. Maintain a proper trimming and shoeing schedule in order to preserve hoof integrity and to catch small problems before they become big problems.

    HOLY SPIRIT, PLEAD FOR US!

    _________________________

    Romans 8:18-27 (NRSV)

    I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God; for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

    Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

    MY teenage daughter and I exchanged bitter words. Accusations flew. Voices reached a crescendo. Doors slammed.

    Afterward I lay on my bed, tears streaming down my face. I felt angry, hurt, frustrated, and discouraged. I had failed as a parent, and I felt bitterly abused and taken for granted. To be brutally honest, I stepped dangerously close to cursing the one who needed my love the most! Instead, I tried in desperation to pray. It was no use. Words of blessing just would not come. The hurt was too new, the anger too raw. What should I ask for? How should I begin? My mind was numb.

    Miraculously, the Spirit interceded, and I heard myself whisper, "I don't even know how or what I ought to pray. Holy Spirit, plead for me with sighs too deep for words!" No sooner had the words crossed my lips than I felt my body and mind relax. My soul rested. I trusted that God would listen to the Holy Spirit interceding for me, not to my sinful nature. I was at peace. I slept. Later, I awoke refreshed and renewed, ready to forgive, to love, to hope, to repent, to be reconciled with my daughter.

    Prayer: Heavenly Father, you know our hearts. Thank you for rescuing
    us from our sinful nature and giving us the Holy Spirit, the Comforter that Jesus promised would come to us. Amen.

  • Friday's horse fact.. -- Cheri, 15:52:45 11/15/02 Fri

    White Line disease..

    Part 6..

    An alternative method ..

    would be to use a bar shoe or open shoe combined with some type of impression material, with or without a pad," he continues. "The impression material can be applied to the entire solar surface of the foot as long as it is molded thicker at the heels to provide the necessary support."

    Turner notes that glue-on shoes of other alternatives should be used if nailing a shoe is too painful for the horse. "For major loss of hoof wall," he says, "large clips can be welded to the shoe and short screws used to attach the clip to the remaining hoof wall. Alternatively, fiberglass casting tape can be used to create an artificial wall so that a shoe may be applied."

    Experts disagree on the effectiveness of topical medications. O'Grady says there was no difference in a group of 10 horses which he debrided and treated with topical medication versus a group of 10 which were just debrided. "The hooves in all of them grew out just fine," he says.

    Turner observes that some experts report good results with topical medications such as povidone iodine solutions (undiluted or mixed with dimethyl sulfoxide), copper sulfate, Venice turpentine, and merthiolate. He notes, though, that phenol, formaldehyde, and strong tincture of iodine can damage sensitive tissues and lead to permanent hoof damage.

    Both Turner and O'Grady warn against covering the resected area with acrylic. "Microorganisms can become trapped under the repair and continue to destroy the hoof wall," O'Grady states. "There is no medication in the acrylic that is effective for fungi or many of the causative bacteria."

    However, the need to get into the show arena might cause an owner to ignore that advice, in which case Turner recommends covering the hoof wall with an antibiotic hoof acrylic. "I caution the horse owner that covering it could make it worse," he says. "To date, we have not seen this happen while utilizing the medicated Equilox under these conditions. The medication is an antimicrobial that is most effective against anaerobes (bacteria that proliferate in a non-oxygenated environment); I feel that it provides an environment that prohibits these microorganisms from proliferating."

    As the hoof grows out, the affected area will continue to need debridement and treatment. "Maintain a shoeing schedule of four-week intervals," O'Grady recommends.
    During this recovery period, the feet should be kept as dry as possible. Avoid turn-out in rain-soaked and dewy pastures, and keep bedding clean and dry. "A well-balanced diet with the addition of biotin and methionine can also be helpful," O'Grady adds.
    Exercise during recovery is permitted, depending upon the severity of the damage.

    FINDING REFUGE

    _________________________

    2 Samuel 22:1-20 (NRSV)

    David spoke to the LORD the words of this song on the day when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. He said:
    The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
    my shield and the horn of my salvation,
    my stronghold and my refuge,
    my savior; you save me from violence.

    I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies.
    For the waves of death encompassed me,
    the torrents of perdition assailed me;
    the cords of Sheol entangled me,
    the snares of death confronted me.

    In my distress I called upon the LORD;
    to my God I called.
    From his temple he heard my voice,
    and my cry came to his ears.
    Then the earth reeled and rocked;
    the foundations of the heavens trembled
    and quaked, because he was angry.
    Smoke went up from his nostrils,
    and devouring fire from his mouth;
    glowing coals flamed forth from him.
    He bowed the heavens, and came down;
    thick darkness was under his feet.

    He rode on a cherub, and flew;
    he was seen upon the wings of the wind.
    He made darkness around him a canopy,
    thick clouds, a gathering of water.
    Out of the brightness before him
    coals of fire flamed forth.

    The LORD thundered from heaven;
    the Most High uttered his voice.
    He sent out arrows, and scattered them
    --lightning, and routed them.
    Then the channels of the sea were seen,
    the foundations of the world were laid bare at the rebuke of the LORD,
    at the blast of the breath of his nostrils.

    He reached from on high,
    he took me, he drew me out of mighty waters. He delivered me from my strong enemy,
    from those who hated me;
    for they were too mighty for me.

    They came upon me in the day of my calamity, but the LORD was my stay.
    He brought me out into a broad place;
    he delivered me, because he delighted in me.

    I was attending a meeting in the boardroom on the top floor of a building on a university campus in downtown Washington, D.C. A sudden summer thunderstorm brought high winds and darkened the room with its low, black clouds. A loud noise suddenly made discussion difficult. Then we noticed that a large number of migrating Canada geese had sought refuge from the sudden storm on the wide windowsills of the building. We temporarily forgot the business of our meeting to watch the geese who had found refuge from the storm in the midst of a large, busy city.

    Those birds caused me to see a spiritual truth: when difficulties arise in our lives, we can seek refuge in our Savior, Jesus Christ. Whether we are lost in the midst of a crowd of people or find ourselves alone in some remote place, God is with us, offering us sanctuary when we feel overwhelmed by the world.

    Prayer: Lord God, our hiding place, help us always to be aware of
    your presence with us. No matter where we are when the storms of life surround us, thank you for being where we are. Amen.

    White Line Disease..

    Part 5..

    Therapy..

    Treatment consists of several steps geared toward providing support while the affected hoof area grows out. The entire undermined outer hoof wall is removed to expose the diseased area, and the affected areas of the horn are debrided until good horn attachment can be identified.

    "Thorough exploration and debridement of any remaining tracts should take place at 10-day intervals," O'Grady says. "Some form of dye marker can be placed on the resected area to highlight the remaining tracts or fissures. When all tracts are removed, a thorough examination is indicated at re-shoeing intervals every four to five weeks. A wire brush is used daily to keep the resected area clean."

    The most important treatment is to correct or eliminate the primary cause that led to the disease. "If you have a long toe or a club foot, treat the condition," O'Grady instructs. "If there's an old abscess, clean up the area. If there is chronic laminitis, give the horse the best foot conformation you can by shoeing."

    Provide therapeutic shoeing to support the frog and weakened hoof wall. "If the defect is small, the hoof can be shod accordingly," says O'Grady. "If the toe is involved, fit the shoe so breakover is moved back under the toe toward the apex of the frog. This will remove pressure on the resected area of the toe. If the resection is extensive and/or if rotation of the third phalanx is present, a heart bar or egg bar-heart bar combination shoe can be used to provide support to the heel area.

    GROWING TOGETHER

    _________________________

    Acts 2:42-47 (NRSV)

    They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
    Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.

    We, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another.

    - Romans 12:5 (NRSV)

    _________________________

    EVERY year my family spends a long weekend, together with other families in our parish, at a large beach house. During this time we develop deeper bonds of friendship, understanding, and love with this group. We take time to listen to each other in an unhurried environment and to work on our relationships with one another.

    Too often we allow a distance to grow between us and other people in our community. Our interactions with our family, friends, and community can become superficial and consequently leave us with a vague sense of "unfinished business" or unfulfillment. Time away, time alone, and time together are all important elements in the search for meaning in our lives.

    As we search, Christ is always available to us to listen in the silence of our homes, in the noise and excitement of a big gathering, and in times of prayer, service, and Holy Communion. Our spiritual growth is a continual "work in progress." And Christ is with us, whether or not we acknowledge his loving, understanding, and forgiving presence.

    Prayer: Jesus, keep us in your circle of friends. Help us to take
    time to nurture our relationships with you and with your friends. Amen.

    White Line Disease..

    Part 4 ..

    Diagnosis..

    Often, white line disease is first discovered during routine hoof trimming. "The farrier or veterinarian can take a knife, explore around the white line or sole wall junction, and it will look absolutely normal," O'Grady says. "He takes a few more passes with the knife, and all of a sudden uncovers an unexpectedly separated area."

    Closer examination of the solar surface of the hoof should confirm diagnosis. "Exploring the inner hoof wall that lies dorsal to the white line will generally reveal a separation filled with a white/grey powdery horn material," he says.

    "Further exploration with a probe will give the depth and extent of the cavitation (formation of cavities). There might be a black serous drainage from the separation."

    Lameness might not be present. "If lameness exists, a thorough lameness examination should be performed, including diagnostic nerve blocks and a complete radiographic examination of the hoof," Turner states. "Radiographs may allow visualization of the wall separation. This will be seen as an air density between the hoof wall and third phalanx. Pedal osteitis or third phalanx rotation may also be noted on some occasions."

    FRAGILE IMAGE

    _________________________

    Ephesians 3:14-21 (NRSV)

    For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

    Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

    THE first year I taught school, I worried about what other people thought. Did other teachers think I was doing a good job? Did they like me? Would I be rehired? I taught with the classroom door open, trying to impress the principal.

    My anxiety grew until I finally gave it all to God. "How can I stop being preoccupied with what people think of me?" I asked. As if in answer, I saw a picture in my mind. I could see myself at a state fair, pumping up a huge balloon of a grinning person. The balloon bobbed and smiled over my head. It looked a lot like me.

    That image has helped me ever since. The balloon represents the impression I try to create for the world. I can work really hard at pumping it up, but it's not the real me. That's why the praise of other people can never be enough, because it doesn't affect the real person underneath the image. Only God can satisfy our need for approval, love, and security. God cares about us, not the image we try to project.
    The next day I taught with the classroom door closed, wanting to trust God.

    Prayer: Dear God, fill us with the knowledge of how much you love and
    care for each one of us. Amen.

    Only God can satisfy our need to be deeply known and deeply affirmed.

    White Line Disease..

    Part 3 ..

    Clinical Signs..

    Indications of white line disease are numerous and varied. In mild cases, the horse might remain sound and show no discomfort; in severe forms, the horse will be lame with the hoof wall displaying massive undermining and separation. Says O'Grady, "White line disease offers no threat to the soundness of an animal until damage is sufficient to allow mechanical loss of the attachment between the laminae and the inner hoof wall, resulting in displacement of the coffin bone in a distal direction (rotation). Only then does the horse begin to show discomfort. In many mild cases, the horse isn't off at all and his owner is unaware the animal has the disease."

    Early clinical signs include:

    Small white or grey crumbly or powdery area along the
    hoof wall-sole junction;

    Tender sole via hoof testing;

    Heat in the foot;

    Increasingly flat foot;

    Formation of concavity along one side of the hoof and a bulge on the opposite side directly above the affected area at the coronary band.

    As the disease worsens, hoof wall growth might slow and the hoof wall becomes weak, chipped, or shelly. A hollow sound might be heard when the outer hoof wall is tapped with a hammer, and lameness can develop. Wall separation between the hoof wall and sole at the white line becomes apparent.

    The disease can occur in one or more feet and affect the toe, quarter, heel, or any combination thereof.

    A BROKEN HEALER

    _________________________

    1 Peter 2:22-25 (NRSV)

    "He committed no sin,
    and no deceit was found in his mouth."

    When he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. For you were going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.

    MY grandmother gave me an aloe vera plant. It was a beautiful plant that was tall, strong, and a vibrant green. "The aloe has excellent healing properties," she told me. "Break off a piece from the plant, and rub the gel from its center on cuts and burns to help them heal."

    I frequently broke pieces off the aloe, sliding the cool, wet gel from pieces of the plant over my cuts or burns. It was soothing, and the wounds healed soon after the treatment. Yet over time I began to notice that my healing came at a great cost to the aloe. Many of the shoots had been broken off, making it look smaller and lopsided.

    Looking at the broken aloe, I was drawn to reflect on how Christ suffered for our spiritual healing. He allowed his body to be broken to atone for my sins. He gave himself for me.

    Prayer: O God, thank you for the immense sacrifice of your son,
    Jesus. Remind us that in following you, we too may face suffering. Amen.

    Horse Breeds You Never Heard Of

    Everyone is familiar with the more common breeds of horse, the Thoroughbred, the Quarter Horse, The Clydesdale etc. But there are literally hundreds of horses around the world that are little known, outside their own geographical area. In this fact you'll find information about a few of the less well-known breeds of horse.

    Maremmano

    The Maremanno hails from Maremma, a former marshland on the coast of Tuscany and is also known as the Tuscan horse. Maremmano horses are the traditional mounts of the butteri, or cattlemen, of the region. They were also used by the Italian Cavalry.

    The Maremmano is believed to be descended from the Neopolitan horses which were made famous in the sixteenth century by Federico Grisone, the founder of the Neopolitan Riding Academy. Grisone was considered to be the first of the great clasical ridng masters after the Greek, Xenophon.

    Cross-breeding with English horses including the Norfolk Roadster resulted in a rather coarse, but useful horse, about 15.3 hands in height, with upright shoulders and flat withers. The breed has become more refined in recent years by the introduction of Thoroughbred blood resulting in a horse more suited to equestrian sports, such as jumping and cross country riding. They can be any solid color, with bays, browns and blacks being most common.

    The Maremmano is a good worker, with strength and toughness combined with a calm nature, making it an excellent choice for working cattle in its home region. The breed is versatile enough to be suited for army and police work, as well as light draft work.

    Kabardin

    The Kabardin is a sure-footed horse from the northern Causasus which has for centuries been carrying men over rough mountain terrain. It traces its roots back to the sixteenth century and horses of the steppe tribes which were crossed with Turkomen, Persian and Karabakh horses.

    Standing between 15 and 15.2 hands in height, the Kabradin is predominantly bay or black in color, usually with few, if any, white markings. It has a long face and roman noses are not uncommon.It is a muscular horse with fairly straight shoulders and low withers. The back is short and straight, the bone is good, although the hind legs have a tendancy to be sickle shaped.

    Kabardin horses are still grazed in the high mountain pastures in the summer and in the foothills in winter and they have developed into a tough, sturdy mountain breed with great endurance.Their sure-footedness and toughness has made them ideally suited to endurance riding and especially safe on mountainous trails.

    Wielkopolski

    The Wielkopolski is one of Poland's most important warmblood breeds, although it is probably the least known. Its origins go back to the Poznan and Masuren,
    which are both now extinct. These two breeds were combined and additional crosses with Thoroughbred, Arabian and Anglo-Arabian blood have eliminated the differences between the two original breeds. The result is a quality, handsome, well-proportioned horse that is bred mainly in western and central Poland.
    Standing 16.2 hands high, the Wielkopolski has a deep, powerful body with strong muscular quarters amd hind legs which contribute to its jumping ability. All solid colors are acceptable.

    The Wielkopolski is popular as a competition horse, where its natural balance and good paces make it well suited for dressage and its powerful conformation make it suitable for jumping.

    FIRST RESPONSE

    Psalm 146:3-10 (NRSV)

    Do not put your trust in princes,
    in mortals, in whom there is no help.
    When their breath departs, they return to the earth; on that very day their plans perish.

    Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD their God,
    who made heaven and earth,
    the sea, and all that is in them;
    who keeps faith forever;
    who executes justice for the oppressed;
    who gives food to the hungry.

    The LORD sets the prisoners free;

    the LORD opens the eyes of the blind.

    The LORD lifts up those who are bowed down; the LORD loves the righteous.

    The LORD watches over the strangers;
    he upholds the orphan and the widow,

    The LORD will reign forever,

    Disorders of the Equine Eye

    In yesterdays fact, I explored the Equine Eye. On this page you'll find some disorders that can adversely affect the eye and how to prevent or treat them.

    Trauma

    Trauma to the cornea, the surface of the eye, is a relatively common eye condition in horses.
    It can be caused by a number of things, such as a scratch from a tree branch or a small puncture from a foreign object.

    The eye will appear irritated, with the lids partially closed. Prompt veterinary care is important as a delay in treatment may mean loss of sight, especially if the cornea is punctured.

    In the majority of cases, the sight will not be lost, but often there will be a small scar, appearing as a small bluish-white mark on the surface of the cornea.

    Tumor of the Third Eyelid

    Occasionally, a tumor will grow on the third eyelid, or nictitating membrane. Seldom malignant, these tumors can invade associated eye tissues.

    The tumor must be removed by a veterinarian. Depending on the amount (if any) of invasion, surgical removal is relatively simple. Tumors can, however, recur in some instances.

    Conjunctivitis

    Conjunctivitis, or inflammation of the conjunctiva, is extremely common in horses. It happens frequently when horses are on pasture and pollen or other irritants get into the eye and cause an inflammation. The eye tears up, the lids swell and the exposed conjunctiva may become reddish. If infection sets in, the discharge turn from clear tears to pus, at which point the condition is known as purulent conjunctivitis. Flies attracted to the eye only increase the misery for the horse.
    Conjunctivitis can be prevented with good management.

    Examine your horse's eyes regularly and if they are dirty they should be cleaned with a piece of cotton soaked in a warm saline solution. After drying the eyes carefully, you can apply an antiseptic oil to the lids.
    Be careful, when applying any oils or ointments, to only use one prescribed by your vet and to take care to avoid scratching and damaging the eye.
    Use of a fine-meshed fly mask can prevent dust and grit from getting into the eye.

    THE SEVENTY-TWO?

    _________________________

    Luke 10:1-20 (NRSV)

    After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself intended to go. He said to them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves. Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this house!' And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you.

    Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for the laborer deserves to be paid. Do not move about from house to house. Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you; cure the sick who are there, and say to them, 'The kingdom of God has come near to you.'

    But whenever you enter a town and they do not welcome you, go out into its streets and say, 'Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off in protest against you. Yet know this: the kingdom of God has come near.' I tell you, on that day it will be more tolerable for Sodom than for that town.

    "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the deeds of power done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. But at the judgment it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon than for you. And you, Capernaum,
    will you be exalted to heaven?
    No, you will be brought down to Hades.

    "Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me, and whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me." The seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, in your name even the demons submit to us!" He said to them, "I watched Satan fall from heaven like a flash of lightning. See, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven."
