Subject: About Lying

I have an example of a letter written in the mid 1940's that is the example of a liar in action. The person is not in control of themselves in at least one respect, and the lie comes about because of the denial of being out of control.

I don't have time to post it now, since it requires transcribing musty handwritten material. I will get it up in a couple of days. The correspondence is between someone I've heard of before, but never met, and one of my relatives. I'll post the reply, also, so that the reality of the situation will become clear.

Lying is ugly, but I thought that posting a standard example of a lie not told by the Community of Christ hierarchy and its pets might be some sort of a novelty here. It is a lie told to manipulate one or two persons, rather than an entire membership of 114,000, so the scope of the lie makes it easier to grasp.

Although the following incident isn't recounted in the letter, just to add a little excitement, I'll say that the person who wrote the original letter was away from home one day and the meter reader found the jumper wires and alligator clamps that the writer had installed to bypass his electric meter and steal electricity -- at the risk of burning his house down. He wasn't prosecuted. The electric company simply moved his electric meter out to a pole almost a hundred yards from his house, sort of like the phone in "Green Acres." I guess the electric company was run by Christians, because they didn't want to drag him to court.

George
