Read the letters below and see what measure of veracity there is to be found in each, using your common sense. This is the same common sense required in interpreting the Price silencing counsel. Deception, lies, and manipulation are all the same whether exerted over religious concerns, or just plain old everyday things. And the way of a liar with the gullible (or those he thinks are gullible) is like "the way of a man with a maid" -- regardless of how many centuries pass, and how language and culture changes, the basics remain exactly the same, regardless of wishful utopian thinking.

(The second letter is not a reply to the first letter, but written to the same addressee over a year later. However, like a soap opera, the story line is redundant enough that even with such a large gap, it may readily be picked up again.)

Brother, I want to ask you to do something that concerns you as well as me, LV and the (Lays?). L.V. quit me about drinking. I know she is your sister and you want things to go the best for her and I don't blame you. I haven't drunk a drop and can give you my word that I never intend to again. I see now what it does. The Seales at the beauty shop are doing all they can to keep us separated. She says not but I know. They have her fooled. Everybody knows it but her. Now I think if you wrote her a nice letter and talked to her and ask her to to go back to me and try me one more time and see if I had quit (which You think I Would. for her and the boys) I think she would. I know this is asking a lot of you? but I really mean it and will promise you that I will never drink any more and you [know] I love her better than anything on earth. Maybe I can help you someway someday. Please help me this much. It's hell to stand to see your home tore up.

Brother, answer this at once, because she may get a divorce next week. Don't let L.V. know that I wrote you, whether you do this for me or not, but [I] am hoping you do. Just ask her to do it for you and your mother['s] sake. She has enough to worry about as it is. She talked to me and I promised that I had quit for good. Answer this and tell me how you feel about [it.] I appreciate anything you can do. I know she will do things for you if you ask her. Brother, please do this and maybe I can repay you someday. Don't even let anyone see this letter except you. Can I depend on you [to] do this[?] Write me at A.B.B. [above address] on you [two words lined out.]
