    Hearst: Gay comments were insensitive
    November 21, 2002

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- San Francisco 49ers running back Garrison Hearst acknowledged Thursday that his comments about gay NFL players were insensitive.

In an interview with the Fresno Bee three weeks ago, Hearst used a slur to describe gays, and said he wouldn't want a gay player as a teammate.

The subject became a matter of national debate last month when former NFL player Esera Tuaolo revealed his homosexuality. Sterling Sharpe, a former teammate of Tuaolo's in Green Bay, said Tuaolo would have been "eaten alive" and "hated" if he'd come out while he was playing.

Hearst toned down his opinions Thursday, but he also didn't take anything back.

"I realized it was a little insensitive, some of the stuff I said," Hearst said.

When asked if he regretted his comments, Hearst was noncommittal.

    "I don't know. If I hurt somebody's feelings, I hate that I did it."

The 49ers' executives, mindful of their home city's large, vocal gay population, distanced themselves from Hearst's remarks.

"I don't think it's reflective of the attitude of the organization," GM Terry Donahue said. "We're way too busy trying to block and tackle to be involved in a social issue. It's unfortunate that those comments were made and insensitive, but we'll go on."

Walt II forwarded this to me:

Sauerbrun furious with Gramatica brothers as feud boils

    Associated Press

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The feud between Carolina punter Todd Sauerbrun and Tampa Bay kicker Martin Gramatica won't end, setting up a possible showdown at the Pro Bowl.

Their dislike for each other escalated Thursday when Sauerbrun said Gramatica's youngest brother taunted him outside of Carolina's locker room following Sunday's loss to the Bucs.

"I don't know who this kid thinks he's playing with but I'm not the most mild-tempered guy,'' Sauerbrun said. "If he would have said the wrong thing to me there's no telling what I might have done ... that kid is as big of an idiot as his brother, and I'm sure his other brother is, too. It goes right down the line.''

Bill Gramatica, the middle of the three brothers, kicks for the
Sauerbrun struck first last week, taking exception to the way Martin Gramatica celebrated his four field goals in Tampa Bay's 12-9 victory over the Panthers last month.

In the rematch, a 23-10 Tampa Bay victory Sunday, Gramatica had to be restrained from going after Sauerbrun following the game.

"One hundred percent of the people that know him don't like him,'' Gramatica said after the game. "I don't respect him; I don't respect people like that.''

Sauerbrun couldn't let it go on Thursday, promising more fireworks at their next meeting.
"He had everyone holding him back to make it look good,'' he said. "You know what, that guy is not even worth the things I have to say about him ... If I have the opportunity to tell him to his face next time, I will. I don't like the guy and that is all there is to say.''

Their next meeting could be in January at the Pro Bowl if both are selected. Gramatica told Tampa Bay reporters Thursday he wouldn't kick if Sauerbrun is his holder. But Sauerbrun said he would do his job.

"I don't want anything to do with the guy,'' Sauerbrun said. "But if I have to hold for the guy then I have to hold for him. I would do it.''

  • The storm is coming, and we're headed for cover -- RhitTaker Headquarters in Chad, 20:15:36 11/17/02 Sun
The monsoons are returning to Chad, and will unfortunately cause a temporary shutdown of operations. Scoring in progress for week 11 will not be available tonight. We are unsure of the duration of the storm. At its most violent, there will be no scoring in progress posted on the site. Final scores would be posted shortly after the conclusion of Monday Night Football. However, it is possible that the storm will lift sooner, and the scores will be up at some point during the day, tomorrow. Amazingly, the duration of the storm in Chad seems to be strongly correlated with the amount of workload at a title insurance company in Oklahoma City. See, in RhitTaker, it really is a small world, after all.

    Panthers punter rips Bucs' Gramatica

Carolina punter Todd Sauerbrun added some spice to Sunday's Panthers-Buccaneers game when he complained about the exuberant celebrations of Tampa Bay kicker Martin Gramatica on Friday.

"The guy needs to act like he's been there before," Sauerbrun said.
It's like when guy a scores a touchdown, just hand the ball back to the ref. It's the same thing for him," Sauerbrun said. "I mean, come on, he's made game-winning kicks before. I think people around the league will respect him more if he just goes about his business on the field."

Sauerbrun said he wasn't necessarily focusing on Gramatica's celebration in the first meeting but his general attitude when he makes a field goal.

"He really needs to chill out, plain and simple," Sauerbrun said. "You don't see me jumping around when I hit a 70-yard punt like I've never done that before."

Todd Sauerbrun better be a bad ass cause tomorrow could be his final day..

  • Looks OK to us. -- Arthur Andersen, 15:26:42 11/16/02 Sat
"Oh yeah, here's some more news -- League Office, 18:19:53 11/08/02 Fri
Due once again to the typhoon in Chad, we were unable to notify people of the trading deadline. Due to this mishap, the trading deadline will be at 10:00 pm, Friday, November 15. In other news Karl and Deryal's future considerations have been finalized. Karl sends Curtis Martin to Deryal while Deryal sends Plaxico Burress to Karl."

This is kinda shakey in that the trading deadline was convientelty moved so that trades could be made for controlling parties.....Its not like the deadline was not public knowledge and was some kind of secret....But I will not go into JFK theories or anything of the like but it is a change to the rules which benifited the person that changed the rule. this can not be argued.

Having said this all parties could have traded but not all parties had the ability to trade...ie knowledge of phone contacts or possibly even players to trade.. So the movement of the deadline only helped players whom had roster depths to trade and had the contact info...

but if Arthur Andersen says its good to go than fine by me.
