A clock was mounted on top of the thin gate which was where Zero now stood. He was given ten minutes to complete the course. "It must be very long...", he though, "...for them to give me that much time." The clock began, and Zero dashed through the opening in the dome-like building. A door opened to find a long ramp, angled down at a steep grade. He half ran, half slid down the ramp, and landed in what he thought was a dream. The red panels, the crackling of electricity. The huge machines. It was all deja vu! He was in a remake of Volt CatFish's layer. He smirked in recognition, as he remembered.
Catfish equals Doppler equals an easy win! He had never fought against the ugly boss. X had insited on handling it, but He knew what worked on VC. And since he didn't have Tunnel Rhino's weapon on him, he decided to make due with what he did have. He ran the course, the same as he did the last time. He slashed the enemies apart, and avoided the traps with ease. It wasn't his fault that he knew the layout of the place. Afterall, it was exact! The only thing that differed was the place where Dr. Light had stored that capsule. It was not there, because in fact, that part had been sealed over. In fact, Zero wondered if he was even on the same Island. The layout was unmistakeble. But he wasn't, and he knew it. So, he pressed on. When he got to the half way points, he expected to see Bit or Byte, but they did not appear. Instead, they acted as check points, where he was told how much time he had left. While in the rooms, he was offered energy or weapon capsules. He hadn't taken much damage, but decided to take all the energy they had left for him. He used it to fill his sub-tanks. He pressed on, and sure enough came face to face with Volt Catfish.
Catfish teleported in, but seemed to phase in and out for a second. Zero couldn't believe his eyes.
"You're dead! You're supposed to be anyway. Who brought you back? What does Doppler want with you?", he asked.
A voice, not Catfish's, but that of a computer said, "Battle simulation Program, Volt Catfish complete. Begin battle scenario." That's when Zero figured it out. This whole thing was just an illusion. A training simulation designed to look like the real thing. It really could kill you, that was for sure, but that's about all that WAS real. Zero used the dash attack he got from Slash Beast to fight VC. It made short work of him, which was good because Zero was running out of time. When VC exploded, two doors opened, and a voice called, "Okay pal, you've got 90 seconds to make it to the exit, or you fail! Get going!" Zero smirked. "Wait till they get a lod of MY drive system!", he said to himself.
--Later, a reporter asked him. "Zeon. You grow more in power, and in respect everytime we interview you. How did you do so well in the maze down there? It seemed natural to you."
"Well, my only comment is this. Practice makes perfect."
"What do you mean by that?", she asked.
"No further comments." ,he said. Then he walked away.
Zero did not mind being on camera. He was still in his disguise, and no one, not even Vile or Dr. Doppler could recognize him. If they had, he might even be dead by now!
Stealth was important. Especially if he was going to find, and free Mega Man X.
