Doppler stepped out onto the landing platform. Vile, eager as always to fight, hung back in case of an ambush. They found none. In fact, there was nothing to be seen anywhere, except a large crate. Doppler had traveled to the American northwest, where the Sequoia trees towered amongst all the others in the forest. The place reminded him of Neon Tiger's domain. But that was a long time ago.
Spot lights swept back and forth over the pad, but there was utter silence for what seemed to be an eternity.
"I don't like it.", Vile wheezed. His voice was scratched, and raspy sounding. "Smells like a trap."
"This is the place." ,Doppler replied, "And our contact is late."
"He left us a box. It is just out there, alone, in the middle of the landing pad. That doesn't look at all suspicious to you?", Vile seethed.
"Was I born yesterday, or something?", Doppler bit out. Before either of them could move or speak, they were both startled suddenly. What looked like a bore drill bit smashed through the box from the inside, out. The crate burst apart, sending wood splinters everywhere. A ferocious growl errupted from the maw of what looked like an armored Grizzly Bear. Doppler jumped a mile, meanwhile Vile had already fired off a concussion missle at the intruder.
Catching it, and deflecting it, Crescent Grizzly cocked his head sideways.
"Gotcha! Ha ha! You should have seen your faces!", He laughed. Then, acting as if he were bi-polar, his tone became drastic, and scolding. He held up the missle, which was still live. "This is how you choose to greet me?" He chastised Vile. He crushed the missle in his hand, and dropped it to the deck with a thud. It did not detonate, it merely deactivated. Grizzly's accent was slightly Russian.
"I hope you have come all this way with good news?"
"Well, we're here alright. Do you have the item?"
"Yes. So eager to obtain this particular piece of merchandise, aren't we?", Grizzly inquired.
"What I do with it is none of your-" Grizzly cut Doppler off, "Come now, are you always this rude? Ever since you contacted me it has been, 'Do you have the item, Do you have the item?' Yes! Yes I have it, I wish you would stop whining so much. Are you always this insecure? Or is it that you cannot wait to use it? Tell me why should I let you have the Enigma Particle Cannon anyway?"
"Because I'm the guy who's going to pay you 52 million credits for it!"
"Fifty-two? I am flattered. Our agreement was for 50 even, but alas...if you are trying to sweeten the pot, I accept. But, I have just come to understand how important it is to you. I think that this calls for a fee of say...."
Grizzly trailed off, letting the thought linger. Doppler raised an eyebrow. "Sixty five!", Grizzly finished.
"Perposterous! Fifty three, no more!", Doppler lashed.
It was the bargaining game. Doppler had tried to add the extra in an effort to sway him. Unfortunately Grizzly had played the bartering card. Now it was up to the two of them to haggle back and forth until they reached a fair agreement. Doppler didn't care anyway. He never intended to pay Grizzly a dime for the Enigma. Instead, he had an interesting plan in mind.
"I agree to your price, but on one condition."
"What is it now Doppler?", Grizzly asked with impatience.
"A person in my position would be fool to pay in full for an item which he cannot carry away. So I want you to deliver it to my Island. Vile will give you the location."
"So, how much am I to get in advance?", Grizzly asked.
"I give you Fifteen million now, and the other forty when you deliver it...IN TACT."
"Now YOU'RE trying to rip ME off!"
"Take it or leave it Grizzly. I don't even have to pay you at all. I could have Vile rip your vox chip out if I wanted to, but that is just bad for business. Now, do we have a deal?"
"Deal. And the sooner we end this deal the better! Just tell me one thing Doppler. How did you get all of this money? You were broke, and out on the street last time anyone heard about you!"
"You really want to know? It was easy! I just held a fight tournament on my island."
"Island? You've still got an island? I though the Repliforce siezed it from you."
"I've had a rough break, but that was in the past. I have a new island now, and I have used it to rebuild my perfect place for just Reploids. In any case, the tournament seemed like the best way to generate quick funds."
"So that's it then? A tournament, huh? Has it gone well so far for you?"
"Well, I've already made back what I spent on the preperations. The rest is all profit."
"So, does the Enigma have anything to do with the tournament?"
"Not exactly.", Doppler told him. Better that he not reveal his true purpose just yet.
"Let's just say that I need it for protection.",He smiled.
Grizzly just smirked, but said nothing. He could not imagine what Doppler needed protection from...let alone with something as powerful as the Enigma. (to be continued)
