First of all, this is no attempt to start a war about who's right and who's not. No flames intended at all. Just offering my 2 cents worth.

Kenamom is correct. Doggett isn't Mulder and isn't supposed to be. No one can replace Mulder, or, (look away quick Kenamon!) DD's acting for that matter. ;)

The way I'm getting through this and actually enjoying the Mulder-less XFiles, so far anyway, is by acknowledging the program as a "new" program as in The Next Generation of The XFiles, or as a "spin-off" from the first seven years of The XFiles. Getting a mindset that the program from years 1-7 is over now and we're into something new and different has been a big help for me. Expecting the old XFiles but with Scully being Mulder, and Doggett being Scully, and Mulder being Samantha, yada, yada, yada, is setting oneself up for a big disappointment, IMHO.

Scully is still battling her problems of coinciding her belief system and the paranormal while trying to fill Mulder's shoes as the only person who knows as much as Mulder does (did) about the XFiles. Whether she believes or not she is the only person now with the experience. Her reputation of several years with the FBI and her personal integrity is at stake for her to continue to be the sceptic- oh yes, as is her loyality to Mulder and wanting him back. So we're seeing her develop an acceptance of the things we know she's experienced. She can't be Mulder; she doesn't have the abilities he had. ( Believe me, it's jarring to hear her say things that Mulder usually does in the 2 part season premier, but she soon tempers that somewhat by ep. three. It's as if she was trying too hard at first and realizes it. But she can try to solve cases using the investigating skills she saw him use many times. For me the writers have a formidable task to keep this, um, believable.

Doggett is different from Mulder in every way. I find myself thinking of him as a really good cop from any other cop show, just suddenly experiencing paranormal phenomenon. He doesn't carry Scully's baggage of religious beliefs and scientific principles to um, "blind" him to look at what he is seeing. He's not out to disprove things that his partner believes, either. He's already let us know that he's seen some mighty strange things (weird human survival type things) as well having a strong commitment to solve cases. Once again, IMHO the writers have quite a task to not make him too strong, too "manly" and over power Scully's character.

These two play off one another differently than Scully and Mulder did, too, to me. There is not a hint of romantic involvement. There is enough on-screen chemistry to make them good working partners. They are establishing trust and insisting on respect from one another.

Mulder. Well, we know so little. He's missing. Gone, kaput. Requiem. sigh. I'm very, very curious how the writers will return him to us, "how" meaning what shape he'll be in mentally and physically, and whether or not he'll return to living as before. The simpliest explanation is the best maybe, in that he'll simply return as Scully did and be ok. Stay tuned.

What's that you say? This is far more info than you wanted? LOL Sorry, just trying to help by offering suggestions to what might make the XFiles a little easier to watch after season 7.

Disclaimer: We've only seen 3 episodes so far so these opinions are subjected to change.

Just remember, it's not the same ball game anymore.
