I agree that Seasons 8-??? of "XF" really need to be regarded as a totally different show than Seasons 1-7 of "XF". But to me the comparison is more like "M*A*S*H" and "After M*A*S*H" rather than "Star Trek" and "Star Trek: The Next Generation", because we've got one of the stars from "original" XF in the new cast. I really wish they *HAD* gone the "Star Trek" route and just had Mulder *AND* Scully abducted by aliens in "Requiem" — leaving Mulder and Scully free to appear in "XF" movies and Dogsbreath and whoever to investigate TV X-Files.
One thing I'm *NOT* worried about, however, is Mulder's behavior, screen time, etc. when he eventually does return to Earth. The Fox execs are paying DD mega-bucks to return and it would be foolish for them to do that unless they were going to "let Mulder be Mulder" — I'm sure he'll be the same Mulder we've grown to know and love over the past seven seasons: expressing paranoia, flirting with/exhibiting tenderness toward Scully, wanting to believe, hangin' with the Gunmen, etc. DD wants to continue playing Mulder in XF movies so I doubt they'll do any really radical overhauling of his character. Several people have expressed a worry that Mulder may "die" at the end of Season 8. That's possible but, IMHO, it's not anything to worry about. Mulder "died" at the end of both Season Two and Season Four. We know, by now, that it's not a fatal or permanent condition for him.
