I actually knew that the same giant mega-corporation owned the Fox Network and TV Guide, I'd just forgotten. That goes a long way to explaining why stars of relatively-low rated Fox shows get on the cover, while stars from much more popular shows on other networks don't.
Some of it, too, I think is the fact that Fox shows seem to mostly be aimed at the younger, "hipper" audience that advertisers are so desperate to reach.
To answer Melissa's question: Yes, "JAG" inspires a fair amount of fanfic, though not as much as "XF". JAG's high Nielsen ratings combined with its stars low public exposure have actually become something of an inside joke among those of us who watch it. It's known as a "stealth hit": LOTS of people watch it, but if you're not one of the ones watching, you have no idea who the leads are! I don't know the age breakdown of the "JAG" audience, but I do know it's one of the few shows that divides it's audience exactly 50-50 between men and women. (Men watch for the cool planes; women watch for the hot actors! Unlike "XF" you don't have to feel guilty for drooling over a bad guy, ala Krycek; all the main characters on "JAG" are on the same side. The "bad guys" are only guest stars.)
Some of the "buzz" for shows like "XF" and "DA" just can't be explained, though, and I guess there have always been shows like that. A similar situation existed in the 80s between "Remington Steele" and "Moonlighting". Both shows were "lighthearted dramas"; both featured very attractive leading men; both featured couples who ran detective agencies while oozing UST; and both shows got approximately equal Neilsen ratings. However, "Moonlighting" got a *TON* more publicity than "RS" ever did. This was despite the fact that "RS" debuted a year before "Moonlighting" and was, IMHO, the better of the two shows.
