Subject: Mrs. Mulder a martyr? (reply to hairytoes archived post)

I agree that it was slightly annoying for Fowley to end up "seeing the light" before she got killed off, but I have to disagree that it was wrong for it to happen with Spender or WMM, and I don't think Mrs. Mulder was redeemed in any way. WMM always showed signs of wavering, IMO, and I never thought Spender was bad, he was just a weak willed pawn.

I can't think of one thing Mrs. Mulder did to redeem herself or make herself a martyr. She took the easy way out, she behaved selfishly and took away the only family Mulder had left. I believe that Mrs. Mulder had no intention of telling Mulder anything about his sister or the past when she called him, because she is indeed so selfish. At least Mr. Mulder attempted to try to explain to FM what was going on before he got offed by Krycek. Instead of facing up to her actions (or lack of actions) of the past, instead of being strong and telling her only son that what happened to Samantha was not his fault and give his life some sort of meaning, she panics and overdoses on pills, which, let's face it, is even the wimpiest way to kill yourself.

I've been thoroughly disappointed with Mrs. Mulder from the moment she was first introduced. Even if she did want to tell FM about Samantha or whatever else was on her mind, think of all the times in the past when FM had approached her and asked her for the truth. Then we all got to see her go into hysterics with her "It was so long ago, I can't remember" antics. The woman makes me sick. It's no wonder her son has so many problems.

Of course, maybe I am jumping to conclusions seeing as how I've only seen the first part of a two parter. Maybe it will be revealed that Mrs. Mulder was indeed murdered and did intend to tell Fox all about what was going on.

Now, about a different part of the episode. I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this since I haven't read all of the archived posts. When Mulder was in the cell with the lady and she was telling Mulder all about the "old souls" and stuff, did that lady just sound like a nut or was it me? Was what she said meant to sound totally unbelievable and stupid so that Mulder's belief in what she said would show us just how desperate he is for some kind of truth? Or were we supposed to believe that this was actually plausible and that Samantha might actually have been taken so that she wouldn't lead a life of misery because of the old souls. I haven't re-watched the ep yet so it's merely my first impression, but I wouldn't have believed that jail lady if my life depended on it. She seemed mentally ill to me, and the fact that Mulder didn't even question what she knew or how she learned it was just plain sad. :-(
