Subject: Die Hand die Verletzt meets Home
In reply to: Scully'sMyHero 's message, "Tonight's Episode, what the heck was is called?" on 22:36:09 01/23/00 Sun

Was the snake-minister kin to the snake-teacher from Die Hand die Verletzt? Umm, makes you wonder doesn't it. Neither was explained; both disappeared mysteriously. And didn't I see a Peacock cousin in Minister O'Conners church? Tennessee, huh, and snakes, thanks Mulder... ;) Oh, and why did O'Conner talk like Luther Boggs?

Well, when this one was finished I scratched my head and said what the heck was that all about?! Watched it again and caught a few more things, but I agree with whomever said it felt hastily thrown together. Rough, somehow. Personally I think the episode could have ended just fine at the hospital with Mulder and Scully, and done away with the whole Snakeman-Macky eating the mouse scene. It was already established he was not whom he pretended to be. That scene really felt tacked on, IMHO

I had trouble following the snakes, um, not literally. I mean both ministers could conjure up snakes whenever. I guess most of them were psychological - in the person's head. Mackey was adept at projecting the image into someone else's head - a sort of hypnosis.(There is a name for this paranormal "talent", I think. Does anyone know what it is?) O'Conner was an expert snake handler. But where did all the snakes come from in the jail? Was Mulder really covered in snakes, or just the one Scully saw slithering away?

Soo many questions. At the beginning, Mulder tells Scully the case seems to be centered around religion. Where did that come from? Wasn't all he had at that time Jared's mysterious snakebite death? Just a Mulder "leap", I suppose. But Scully says maybe those particular snakes were actually serving evil. wow Scully! She told us right there what was going on!! But speaking of Jared's death, wasn't that one of the creepiest scenes ever? Didn't YOU check under the car seat the next morning before getting in the car? hee hee

So have y'all already discussed why Jared had the fertility test in the first place and I've just missed it? Because Gracie was pregrant, we all assumed Jared was the father. What made him suspect he wasn't the father? Maybe when he put his hand on her tummy to feel the baby move he could feel the squirming and wiggling going on inside? Just teasing..I don't suppose she had any pre-natal care, either..or are we to believe the fetus was changed into snakes? eww, now that's really gross!

Didn't you think Mulder was just alittle slow on the uptake on this? For all his experience in profiling and his inate knowledge of paranormal things, he should have been there long before he was. I mean, I thought something was up but didn't know just what when the church secretary was bitten, and I'm certainly no Mulder.. lol When he was talking to Mackey just after, and Mackey said he and church sec. had just been discussing Jared, then something happens to her and O'Conner is nowhere around, well, Mulder wake up! Maybe I'm reading something into this that isn't there, but IMHO he was slow figuring this out.

More strange characterization is seen when just after the snakes are um born - eww, that sounds awful! Mulder and Scully are kneeing down looking at the blood and the snake-tracks and Scully doesn't even react when Mulder thinks Gracie birthed snakes. Strange. I wanted an, "But that's not possible, Mulder!" sigh

But there was alot that was good about this episode. I had trouble deciding which snakes were real and which ones were computer generated, and I like that. Those actors appeared to be holding real live rattlesnakes in some of the scenes. (eewww)

The acting was great. The actor that played O'Conner was so believable, from his self righteousness to his quite indignation when Mulder was practically accusing him of murder to the awesome hysterical seizures while "preaching" and handling the snakes, this guy was terrific. The girl that played Gracie was good too. Hasn't she been on another episode?

Loved the comment by Mulder of where's the light switch when they entered the dark church, and Scully's 'nearest one is 10 miles'. So funny coming from these two that never look for light switches but always use their flashlights! Ha!

Oh yes, I liked Mulder-casual also. It's got my vote for more. But, um where was he carrying his gun? He had to put the jacket on to strap on the gun, right?

The very beginning conversation between M/S in his office felt like old times - again. I love how they are compatible again.

Detoured, are you gonna charge me for space? lol
Chantal
