have another meaning here. There is an old saying that someone is carrying a torch for someone when they still love that person--even if the other person doesn't love them in return.

I agree with you that the slug thing was really awful and the "surgery" that Doggett had to do to remove it was really crude. I can't belive that she didn't just die there or miscarry as you mentioned. This also reminded me of an old television advertisement that had the line "Just think of the germs!" It still makes me shudder.

The relationship between Scully and JD does seem strained at this point but maybe he will just have to have more time to relax. He seems like a classic "Type A" personality to me!
