In reply to: CW 's message, "Wasn't there a reference to the boy on the beach" on 13:27:21 11/30/00 Thu

"Diana Fowley appeared as his wife because Mulder has strong feelings for her, but also that she had always agreed with him, never questioning his theories or actions. If he had allowed Scully into these dreams, she would have soon questioned the bullshit nature of this passive life. And on his fantasy deathbed this is exactly what she does. This is where I see the significance of the beach scenes. I think the boy is Mulder; the sand spaceship is a symbol of his work on the X Files, each bucket of sand is a step nearer the truth & when there is a danger of him accepting the passive life, he can see himself destroying the nine years he has put into it. Only when Scully brings him back, both physically & psychologically, from the brink do we see Mulder rebuilding the spaceship with new energy & seeing that it is the only way."

OK - I've repeated the above paragraph of Sig's because I believe it says very clearly what was going on in Mulder's mind, when he was experiencing the dream/hallucination state he was in. I am not a Fowley hater. OK, I know she was basically a baddie, but she had an agenda of her own and I believe she did have feelings for Mulder. I also think Krycek tried to help Mulder. I think *he* called Fowley, when Mulder was collapsed on the stairs. These two characters are not wholly black. (IMO)

LOL at 'the longest forehead kiss in the world' comment by Detoured. Yes, that was a bit ridiculous. I start getting uncomfortable at these overly motherly shows of affection by Scully. I'd rather a big hug than a motherly kiss on the forehead. I'm no shipper (as you know) but it is probably more convincing to place a quick smacker on the lips, even of of your best friend, than to be like a chaste aunt!

I feel like the story is even still sinking in: I still don't know if Mulder will experience any further symptoms. There was little information as to why he was affected by the artefact, and then why he recovered. He wasn't exactly 'cured' was he? I wonder if what happened to him is bound to resurface. When Scully came at the end and willed him to get back out there, I was reminded of Deep Throat and his father coming to see him in 'The Blessing Way' and telling him it wasn't his time to die yet. It was very moving..

I still wonder about CSM being Mulder's father, but the words he heard could have been hallucinatory again. CSM wanted Mulder to be his son; in Two Fathers, One Son CSM chided Spender for not being the son he wanted. He aspired to have Mulder as his son, but that was not really shown to be the case. However, Mrs Mulder again seemed to be playing a negative role with her son; why was she so happy to sign him out to CSM? I've never liked or trusted her!

Most people think the boy on the beach was Mulder as a child and between them, he and his adult self built and rebuilt the foundations of their beliefs. One of the most moving sections of the three-parter.
