It's really interesting reading the above posts. I have to agree in most things but would like to point out a couple of other possibilities.

First of all, regarding Scully shooting Pfaster, she had said that she was responsible for him not getting the death penalty. It was her plea or testimony or whatever that sent him to jail. I concluded then that she felt it was her responsibility to make sure he went back however after he tried to kill her again, she acted in self-defense (maybe a little bit delayed but self defense nevertheless.) She wasn't her usual self when she shot him and did question this later when she asked "who was working in me?" I think she has been quite naive when it came to actually seeing and experiencing evil. Her religion taught her of it but actually experiencing it first hand didn't happen until Donnie Pfaster came along.

Secondly, the images of the devil, the 666, etc. just served to remind me that there is evil in this world which takes many forms. Many religions associate evil with the devil, hence that image. The satanic cultures use 666's and other symbols and I think that was why they were included in this episode. The impression I got was that the writers brought in several references to evil in order make sure that their point was made and received by a large audience.

As for the episode itself, it was written well and followed the first episode plot quite nicely. The suspense was there, as was the character development. I actually thought Scully's character had a chance to grow and expand from being a science based individual to one who has experienced first hand, the realities of evil and was able to become strong enough to take a stand. It was almost she had decided that the world had seen enough of Donnie P.

The only question I have still is how does that song-music fit into the scheme of the plot. It worked well but I can't pinpoint why or how.
