Subject: Too much Gillian Anderson, not enough Scully
In reply to: CW who really likes the above picture too!!! 's message, "All Things--who wants to start?" on 10:48:59 09/11/00 Mon

There are so many things I don't like about this episode. I think I'll just list them.

1)Excessive slo-mo. The first time the slo-mo played was really cool. The 7th, 8th and 9th times were just too much. I've heard people say that the camera technique helped tie the episode together and give it a feeling of continuity. I'm not sure how much I can argue with that. Without the camera technique, it would have been hard to see how the episode connected. A little slo-mo is sophisticated... in Rush it was beautiful... but GA completely overdid it.
2)Scully with (as det called it) "man problems." Talk about GA's episode suggested that it would kind of be a How Scully got to where she is now, struggling through the FBI, Scully's perspective. Instead it was just (one of many this season) a soap opera episode.
3)Colleen. GA tried to parallel Colleen to Scully- a play-by-the-rules woman in a technical, scientific field who had cancer and was in a relationship that she felt she had to hide, and oh! she's also a redhead. Very subtle.
4)That nice, vague spoiler. The only reason for the spoiler was to suggest that Mulder and Scully had sex. Can anyone think of *any* other reason for the spoiler? No?
5)Too much GA, not enough Scully. The idea that everything is connected, that we already are where we're supposed to be, newagephilosophythisandthat-- these are GAs viewpoints, not Scully's! GA herself said that she wanted to use this episode to forward some of her beliefs, and she succeeded.

I think there were more things that I didn't like, but that's all I have time for right now. That's enough to debate, isn't it?
