Subject: Another point of view about The Kiss from Millennium.
In reply to: detoured 's message, "Millenium..." on 14:44:21 03/29/00 Wed

First of all a disclaimer. No flames please, I'm just showing another point of view about the kiss. It's a POV I find quite believable. And as always an interesting topic of discussion.

Next, I did not write this. I wish I had. The credit goes to Agent Romney from Snoopland. Yes, a guy. Perhaps that's why his POV on the MSR is different from the seemingly majority. The following is directly quoted.

********************

While I don't see the MSR/UST and do enjoy how they relate to one another nice and plutonic-like, I definitely don't think it's an open and shut case on whether M&S have any romantic inclinations towards one another. Ambiguity is definitely a tool which the writers love all-too-much, and they definitely haven't had any problems with interjecting it into how M&S relate to one another. So lemme run this possibility (or red herring or my own thinking ) past anyone who's still reading....

WHAT IF....all these years M&S *have* actually wondered *in the back of their minds* whether anything could actually happen between them *more* than just the friendship they've been in ever since they first met? What if some little part of them did entertain that possibility just a tad, but because they were amidst aliens, conspiracies, death and such they reasoned that it wouldn't be a good idea to get involved with one another just yet. Maybe they didn't totally blow of the notion that something more than friendship could bloom between them *after* their work had been completed...after they had finished working on the xf division, fighting against flukemen and gov't conspirators. Alright, so with that in mind they both just do their jobs and don't let anything distract them or get in the way. So here comes along "Millennium"...and they've just adverted..the apocalypse (yeah right), and they're at the hospital or wherever and they see the countdown to the year 2000. HAPPY NEW YEARS! 8D Everyone on the tv is all excited and kissin' and M looks over at S and is thinking, 'Eh, why the heck not?!' So he kisses her...and she kisses him...and he kisses her back.... A nice, loooooong, new years smooooooooooch! So after the kiss, M's like...'No, big deal...world didn't end.' And Scully replies...'No, it didn't....' And then they both get this weird, disappointed look on their faces. Like they realized that the kiss really *wasn't* a big deal. Didn't seem like either of them felt any sparks. Could even be inferred that after all these years they both may have felt as though they were simply kissing a family member...or simply just a very, good friend. A lot of different people at one time or another had friends of the opposite sex in their lives who they wondered if anything more than just friendship could come about. So maybe it's very reasonable that in the world of TXF, M&S too wondered whether anything more could become of them. Maybe it was when they kissed each other after their work with Frank Black in "Millennium" that any slight wonderings they had in the back of their minds was finally put to rest with that non earth-shattering, friendly kiss.

Kinda makes sense to think that Carter and Co. may have done all they felt was necessary in dealing with the MSR/UST -- something whose origin apparently was not with 1013 but something which just came to life on it's own through the vast subtext of the show. The kiss between M&S in "Millennium" may very well have been Carter trying to get closure on something which he never really intended to interject between his two favorite agents. Maybe those shared looks of disappointment on their faces was surprise...a realization that they both really were *just* friends and nothing more was to come of it. Always fun to dream a little dream...even if it's not something that you really want -- can't help but feel a little bit of loss when the dream is over. Opposites supposedly attract...but I'm thinking not all the time.

******************************

So, isn't that interesting? I have to agree based upon the fact that the following episodes show no further development of the MSR - so far.

As for the ending of Amor Fati, well I bought it up until Scully drags her fingers over his lips. I appreciated that she could reveal to Mulder how confused she was, that she didn't know what to believe. Then they profess how much they relie upon one another. But the lip thing just didn't fit. It seemed so 'just added' for the shippers. Have of me was yelling at Mulder, "You wuss, grab her and plant a smack-a-roo big time on her! and the other half of me was thinking, "What on earth is she doing?? This couple isn't physical with each other for her to be doing that." Because I found it very erotic. Then later on in the season as I realized Scully doesn't have that really short hair seen in that scene for some time I felt somewhat betrayed (perhaps that's really too strong a word ); that the ending we saw had been "tacked" on at very last minute and the director, GA, or whomever, had not even cared one iota to put a wig on GA to match the rest of the episode.

JMHO, and 2 cents worth.

waaay older than any of you young'uns.
